So to those who are sending dried colonized grains through the mail, (non-active only of course), are you just using envelopes or protected packaging? That is what has kept me from sharing swabs. Seems like they are going to mess up the machines.
It also just occurred to me that millet would probably be easier to mail than oats or wheat because they are smaller. So I will be learning a new grain, unless someone knows a reason that millet is not good to mail.
I just hate swabs and thought that dried grains might be the answer. Now I have doubts. Anyone have some experience or advice?

if cost isn't an issue there are sfds that come in a small enough circumference to be properly silicone fit to a jar, no cutting a bunch of small circles
The fastest lid is postal tyvek with 2 strips of micropore tape. Only downside is you need some foil. Sfd is so convenient not having to use foil.

I cant speak for his reasoning, but fathster for instance, packaged his in a swab pack along with the swabs. Dunno what grain it was.
Definitely try dried grains, but dont take dried grains straight to new grains. Learned that one the hard way

I send swabs in regular envelopes with no issues regularly.
I used to make a little card paper folder or yse a greeting card but a couple times was in a rush and they still made it fine so

I prefer SFD myself, the unmodified lids don't work well for me. With the SFD I can be assured the lid is tight, there's gas exchange, and if any contaminants show up it's because of my shoddy and amateurish work

Unmodded lids are cool and all, that is till you get Tyrophagus mites that ride in on a bag of grain and crawl into and infest every one of your grain jars, then have to bug bomb your house and start everything over from cold storage culturesโฆ

But hey mite as well take the risk right?

Again, yes.
Green mold is mold that is dropping spores. I'd gently put that in a trash bag, put another bag around it, and take it out of your house to the trash can.
If you must grow that out and eat the shrooms, I'd boil them to make tea first, to kill any nasties in there.
Might not be dangerous but I don't like that much errant spores running around my home space and grow space. There are always mold spores in a house, but not that many in a pile.

After almost 2 weeksโฆ this is the only, barely visible growth from a ghost swab, the other plate I did was contaminated. Should I grow this out? Transfer? Toss it and try again?

Millet in dime bags taped to a greeting card works well.

Tyvek circles over the lid is for sure the quickest and easiest. No foil needed and I get 10+ cycles before they look weird enough ti replace.
Also if youโre sending swabs or seeds just write โnon machinableโ on the envelope and add an extra stamp. That way they wonโt run it through the machines. Even if they do the swabs just get snapped but still usable.
Iโve also been cutting the spore covered part of the cotton off and folding it in foil like a print when I mail them.

Yea man, I now have a strict policy about not bringing stuff from outside into the myco room unless it's heat-treated. Luckily they never got into my cultures, only grain jars.

Iโll admit it doesnโt look great, but Iโve had growth like that on overly nutritious agar and/or in cold temps. It can sometimes start to show a normal white myc appearance in time or after transfer.
What was your agar recipe?

That sounds pretty nutritious. I only use LME, but the combination of the potato soak and the dextrose seems a lot higher nutes than normal for 400mL.
Iโve read recipes that use 50% soak water only, let alone the dextrose on top of that.
If this is your only swab, Iโd do one transfer to weaker plates just to be sure itโs a contam. If you have others, make some weaker plates and try swabbing those.
