I didn't mean to be flippant mate
but yeah tell your friend to have a go at the PF in earnest... it is extraordinarily resilient and can produce very respectable results when you consider how little nutrition is in a PF cake

ESS is dope.
I had a hell of a time getting it to work though. First it was tough getting a good looking plate and then I got massive pinsets that turned 95% aborts
The caps always make me think of an octopus stretching out.

Don't jinx me, all my cube grows recently have been putting out carpets of pins then aborting damn near everything just before maturity.

My Lucy melmac clone has rust colored spores. Is it possible that back in the day when I took prints/swabs that this grow came from that my melmac spores were "contaminated" with rusty white causing a cross? I didn't think much of it at first. The cake this clone came from had mostly normal gold colored caps but I cloned a white capped fruit and now that I'm fruiting the clones I'm getting rust colored spores. Thought back to when I harvested these melmac spores and I had alot of RW fruiting at the time.
Or could it just be a coincidence that my Lucy melmac clone also has rust spores?

Any help would be great! About to birth these guys and upon pulling the foil back I found this spot. The jars were purchased so IDK if the dry verm layer is even and BRF wiped clean or kinda half assed (likley). Haven't looked for contam in along long while.

Thanks to all the great growers in this piece!

Take the foil off while colonizing. Once they come out of the steamer/pot/pressure canner the foil's job is done and it needs to be removed so the myc can breathe.

I am just getting ready to birth these guys shortly and wasn't sure about the blotches of seemingly little action. 23 days in and just wanted second opinions is all.

I just left the foil loose with a dome cause I check on them alot?! I'm not sure if checking on them for contam regularly introduces more BS or if I'm being paranoid lol. A pro from 99-00 that is now a noob once again. The concept is no different just the amount of input and teks are a little intense.

What does that mean? What is involved in "checking on them" ? I am really confused here.
Like MP said, you need to remove the foil right after sterilization and there is a reason for that: if you let the jars cool with the foil on, it will create condensation that may drip inside your jars, dragging contam with it.

I just inspect the outside of the jars for contam and progress, probably too often. Every other day sometimes daily. If it's not necessary I'll ditch it. FAE.. got it. Thanks for help.

Not only does the foil prevent FAE, but it also will allow your dry layer of verm to get and stay moist. It is detrimental to the process and not a part of the tek as PF wrote it. Definitely ditch it.
Your jars look fine, and the uncolonized verm at the top appears to just be your dry verm layer.

Those jars look good to go.
As the colonize they shrink a little and usually some of the verm on top falls down a little. It can make it look uncolonized but itβs actually just covered by verm.

(regarding casing layer bevore fruiting pans)

Shrimps said: Sure, I will keep you guys updated ;-) Quick question, since the casing layer shouldn't support the mycelium with nutrients, I can also just go coir/verm right? Just don't have any peatmoss laying around atm
You can use CV as your top layer but not for your casing. You need something non nutritious and I believe with a PH of about 8. Peat moss is a very good option for this reason with a bit of pickling lime to bring up the PH.
Thanks for your reply!
Didn't want to continue this in the thread where it doesn't belong. But what if peatmoss wouldn't be an option? Hard to find it in my place And I thought CV would not have any nutrition? Couldn't I just adjust the PH with the CV and use that? Or any other recommendations? ^^
