Great experiment fahtster, I'm currently looking at different drying methods for grain and ways to transport agar cultures.

Thanks.. micello already did it Here but he had it just opened so just getting an idea of how much DR to use and how much slower, if at all, it’ll be with my lids. My estimate is 3 days but it’ll be cool to get it down to within a couple hours by keeping track.

fahtster said: Damprid to dry out colonized grains testing, underway. Got the three 4oz jars of fp+ revived clone recovered after a final shake (they got 3 total). They’re already starting to dry out (been in the jars 20 days now) so I think they’re about as colonized as they’re gonna get.

From this point on I want them broken up while they dry… it’s extremely hard, if not impossible (from shaking alone at least), to break the kernels up once it’s a dried block of myc.
How I normally dry them is just removing the tape covering most of the large GE section on the lids

Normally it takes a few weeks to dry them out with the tape removed but trying to speed that up to a few days with damprid. Just doing one jar at a time to see how it goes.. gotta be careful not to dry them out too much so that the myc doesn’t die. So, I’m keeping it simple and using a ziplock container with a cup of DR.. put a 1/4” GE hole in the container lid with a couple layers of MTP for good measure. The other two jars will be a comparison without the DR and I’m keeping track of the amount of time in the container.

Pretty noticeable desiccation after 24 hours. Before and after

Especially noticeable against the other two jars that have been just chilling outside the chamber. There’s regrowth starting on those. I did add another cup of the DR after about 12 hours.

I’m shooting for just before they’re this dry to take em out

Hey guys. I need some guidance and direction at this stage in my first grow. I'm at a constant temperature of about 60F and I increased FEA by cracking the lid on my unmodified tubs. Im still seeing some growth, but it looks like many of my shrooms are starting to look ready for harvest. It doesn't help that many of the larger ones are mutants so idk if it's time to harvest them. Can you guys make some recommendations on what you would do at this point in the grow? Also, I got tons of side pins, how do I correct that? Looking for a mentor here as I think I have way too many questions and want some opinions and suggestions don't want to to bog down the thread.
Looking for suggestions on how to improve for my second grow. I have a bunch of spawn ready to go.
Here's the pics from my GT/JMF mixed tub...

Adding some pictures of my mutant JMF tub. I'm wondering what to do because the veil is broke on many of these but they are only an inch or so tall, except for some of the larger mutants.

I keep wondering how it works. Is some mycelia simply dying out, is it "receding", losing some in matting to protect others in a crypt state, is all "dead" mycelia born with a chance to recover from a 100% dry state, or how close to 100% is it?

I'm not an experienced cult. by any means. That said, I spent countless hours reading and soaking knowledge. My agar game is probably already above average. I've had very successful grows already, all thx and credits to this amazing community.
I'd see that as an opportunity to give back to this community (offer stands only until I get fucking bored with you ).
If that's good enough for you, all you have to do is send a PM. If not, that's also absolutely fine.
PS: a simple liner will solve your side pins issue

When I drift far from 69f (72f on the substrate) Shit gets weird. 60 is way too cold. explains much of how your grow looks. everything is slower, so it has more time to dry out. Also, if its warm enough, its very biologically active and creates lots of moisture.

So in the beginning of the DR trial I was a little worried about drying them out to much while I was at work because I didn’t know how fast it would happen… it wasn’t happening as fast as I thought with the amount of DR I was using, so I decided to go all in and just throw the whole bag of DR in a zip.. poked a couple needle holes for some GE and covered with 1 layer of MPT.. we’ll see if things pick up at all

More picks from my JMF/GT mixed tub.
When should I harvest them? And how long can I wait to harvest them, do they go bad if left unharvested? First grow, still trying to absorb as much knowledge as I can from you guys. And I know some people were interested to see a mixed tub.

Harvest the ones that have opened. Leave the others until they almost open. Most people harvest just before they open or at least before they drop spores.
Fully opened and dropping spores are still good, but might taste not as good to some people. I don't mind them though.
I recommend when you harvest, you twist, not cut. Cutting can leave stumps that can get gross.
I twist, then filet them, cut off the very bottom that has a little sub on it. I toss that. It seems odd at first, but you're going to soon grow more shrooms than you can possibly eat, so don't worry about "wasting" that little bit.
Pick the best few of them, clone or spore print them.
Do you have a dehydrator? I dehydrate on 165 for 16 to 24 hours (depending on if I fill the dehydrator or not), then vacuum seal.
Good start you're off to.

Found a new source of grain in my area, so much cheaper than I was paying and super clean. I bought some red sorghum and some white sorghum, first time trying white sorghum.

Thank you for the advice! I appreciate the help. I do have a food dehydrator and vacuum sealer.
I'll get these harvested and dryed. One thing I'm worried about is that I need to leave for a couple days for work. Do you think I can set these for 24 hours and then they can sit in the dehydrator for 24 hours before vacuum sealing?

That does look clean. Good for you man .
I need to start looking for a source for myself. I like to think that there has to be someone with all those farmers within a 15 min drive radius from my home.

I'd say no cause they'll just soak up the humidity that's around them in the sir and get soft. Like leaving a bag of chips open for a day.

they reabsorb a bit of moisture really fast if you let them sit in the dehydrator after it turns off

If you have no choice, go for it, just turn your dehydrator back on for a hour or two before sealing. Other options might be delayed harvest or refrigerator for a night then dehydrator?
