GSW has always given me weak growth so I avoid it, but I make LC broth with .1-.2% LME in distilled h20.

The above is .1%
Why distilled? So you can preserve longer? Sediments?

He said that distilled gives clear broths while normal waters make yellow broths, which is also my experience.

Have you noticed any difference in how clear agar comes out?

That I have not, never used tap water for agar before. Always used distilled since I first started making LC and got yellow stuff.

Thanks. Makes sense. I use tap water and my broths are clear but yellow.

I said that I use distilled h20 in all liquid media, are you guy's actually reading the info or what lol.
Sterilizing hard water will give you a yellow tint whether there is agar or LME or both present in media. Distilled water will ensure clarity of both agar and LC broth so long as you have chosen the proper malt extract.

I did not read that, just saw sandman's response and the question popped into my head.
Thanks for clarifying though

hey there shroomies,
I have a quick question. I have two grain bags of MSS inoculated PE colonising for almost a month. These are the photos:

There are parts where grain is not completely colonised. ALthough its looking about 95% fully colonised.
is there anything that I need to worry about if I add it to substrate at this point? Or should I wait longer? It seems like colonisation is pretty slow so getting too 100% will take a while.
Really appreciate all advice, I'm a newb!
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the Shroomery.
You probably want to read this
And you may want to ask your questions there for more/faster answers -> Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers
Unfortunately your bags don't look so good. They look bacterial. The grains pressed against the plastic and at the bottom will probably never colonize if they are affected by bacteria like I suspect..
Edit: Just so you know, the excessive condensation and slimy stuff are indicators of bacteria

Thanks so much for the info! Damn it, that is disappointing. Any chance to salvage these? Or should I just get rid of them? Thanks again!

Don't get rid of them, as least not the bacterial ones. You've already gone that far.
If you see colors in the bag (blue, green, etc..) it's mold sporulating. You prob do not want to open those.
If it's only bacterial (no colors, no "powdery" stuff), you could try and case and fruit in the bag.

Perfect, thank you so much! There is hope for me. I was going to try hoodie tek anyway, so I'll go ahead with that and see what eventuates. What temperature should I keep the bag at once I've cased it? To optimise growing and reduce chances of contamination? Should it be in a dark room during colonisation of substrate? Thank you again!

68-72 is a good range. No need for dark at any point.
