Coir is great.
Straw is not a bad sub and is available nearly everywhere humans inhabit. Manure for cubes would be the next go to down the line should that not be available. Coir is what most people who have regular and almost predictable success use as a substrate for cubes and that is for good reason. Coir is a 100% imported item if you live in North America or Europe or much of the rest of the world.
There are always pros and cons. Available, good, and cheap are the important things.

Josex poke works well for cloning; split the stipe and scrape some of the internal tissue out with the needle. Then squirt it into a brf puck. I've had good luck making LC straight from clones this way too.
This is how I cloned before I had agar. It worked super good.

I disagree with this, having grown with hpoo for longer than a decade I still often prefer to use hpoo over coir and consistently get larger fruit on hpoo.

I think I remember you saying Nats do quite well on HP. Have some kicking about for my Pans. May give them a try with a bit of poop!

Everyone has preferences.
The main point was to refute this idea that manure grows dont use grain spawn. Not sure where that came from just pointing out they use grain spawn just like coir grows.

Am preparing to make another round of PF tek. Was wondering if anyone experimented with using grain water to hydrate them. I'm not using standard PF lids. I've made some with ports and filters so I don't need the dry verm layer. Would using grain water be too many nutes for myc?

PF cakes are already really loaded with food. BRF is pretty nutrient dense. I don’t think it will hurt anything, but not sure it’s going to help all that much.

So I’ve read that you should wait till PEU is done growing and turns blue to pick them. Is this still the general consensus? And what’s supposed to turn blue? Caps? This is what I’m looking at now.

Remember, to do experiments with useful results, you have to use clones. There is too much variation in multispore to be scientific in controlled tests.

I thought they looked like they were aborting the last pic you posted. Something seems off/weird about them

Here’s a couple more pics of them. Is it not normal for them to grow sideways and back into the sub like that? I have the light straight above them so not sure what they’re looking for. Would you even consume these? I have some more PEU myc cleaned up on agar ready to go but it’s from the same mss. Should I just try again?

Mycelium: "Finally some good food!" But seriously if that's a mix of different grains that's highly nutritious and explains the extremely rhizomorphic growth.
