i wonder if cooking it at 350*f in an oven will sterilize it? for about an hour?
Probably could hydrate it and wrap it up tight in a turkey bag maybe?
good suggestion, a bag would hold more than a PC. could probably fit 4 in my oven. might do a side by side....

I'd read up on the bag itself. Maybe put it in a big roaster pan that has some water in it too. However you would use it properly for a turkey, but with coir instead. But in all of this, bucket tek should be good enough alone. Pour boiling water in a bucket and wrap it with a couple wool blankets it's gonna stay hot af for a long time, well beyond pasteurization probably.

So looks like your question has already been answered. I have a question for you. Have you been running lids unnodded upside down? If so how do you like it? I hate it I've dropped my lids too many times. What I do is heat the rubber gasket with a torch and use the back of my scalpel handle to remove the seal. It comes right off when heated up. Then the lid sits perfectly on the rim of the jar and doesn't slide right off if you are being clumsy in a SAB. I don't really run unmodified lids I use SFDs and metals but I hate flipped lids. Hate them.
This is my first time running unmod hence the question lol no the only reason I was using unmod lids was for this Seed petri tek Just read up the posts I use an igloo cooler for my "bucket" coir prep and Ive had hydrated coir in it over a month many times sometimes add just a little hot water to bring back to capacity or add more coir and water to bulk up what has been sitting and have had zero issue with coir contamination but that could just be idiots luck though

i wonder if cooking it at 350*f in an oven will sterilize it? for about an hour? mold dies quickly at 100*f+.
I put my casing (w/COIR) in a covered pie tin in the oven at 225F for 60 min. You could probably put your entire block of COIR in the oven for an hour or two if you wanted. I used to use higher temps but it discolored the COIR, it made no noticeable difference beyond that.

this would be worth testing a bit - just nuking the dry coir in the oven

coco bliss is fine. Use it, it does not have the added trich some coir for plants has. Trich actually helps plants and ruins shroom grows.
Why are people talking here about sterilizing coir? It's overkill, not needed. Most people here use boiling water on them in a tub or bucket (I use a big orange insulated water container). Some TCs even use room temp water.
If you're trying to clean up coir that has trich, don't. Toss it and get new coir.
Coco bliss is good. Also coir sold at pet stores for animal bedding should not have trich. If it has a pic of a big spider or a lizard on the cover, it's probably good. But Coco Bliss is fine for sure.
"Plantronix Coco Blis is good coir for growing shrooms. Nature's Premium brand coir is also good. And the coir used for lizard bedding and spider terrariums is good for shrooms. Some coir for plants has ADDED green mold (Trichoderma harzianum, aka Trich) that's good for plants but ruins shroom grows." from here

Good to know! I was thinking of pasteurizing verm I had stored in the attic for years. Do you think I would be ok simply using boiling water to hydrate as described?

Nektar is right. Bucket tek is fine. I started this overkill coir thing when I posted about how I do coir with my pasteurization steam box.

Yes boiling water is plenty hot enough to pasteurize it and destroy mold spores.

This is the old thread I found the idea in. But it's not really a build guide and the plastic bucket they use in it warps and fails overtime so I use steel bucket with a lock ring lid now. But this thing isn't required for coir, it is good for doing straw and poo. It takes some electrical know how, it can shock you to death, and burn you like crazy.

Damn, all this coir talk got me worried. I have always used bucket Tek to pasteurize. Though, I've recently read that there is no need to heat coir, so my next round of subs are no heat. ๐ Great time for an experiment I guess. Lol ๐งช

Holy smokes, I did 3lbs and thought it was huge, 8lbs will be like a small child! If it helps, 3lbs at 2hrs, 15psi was fine. I'd bet 4hrs would work for you.
Good luck!

Haha yeah did think so, was just worried about the heat getting to the center of those size bags for long enough. Should be good - cheers.
Got a microscope and another pressure cooker coming on Tuesday, super stoked.
