Coir possesses significant amounts of natural potassium (K) and phosphorus (P). It also contains trace amounts of nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), boron (B), chlorine (Cl), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo) and zinc (Zn).Oct 2, 2020
So I dunno about ever just saving it and letting it sit for any period of time. It's also why I run mine in gallon freezer zip locks in 165°F electric steam box I made.

I think that's the brand it was...sounds familiar 🤔
Idk, I've read about people letting it sit for extended periods in 5 gal buckets.. I've let it sit a few times, but most of the time I make enough for a couple weeks-a month and put it in gallon ziplocks then poke a couple small pin holes in them... I've only let it sit in the stockpot once before and it was fine.

Damn, now I’m re-paranoid about the shelf life of coir lmao.
Yeah, I mean something had to have gotten in. Once in a while I’ll find the smallest speck of mycelium from a colonized grain or something, but haven’t had mold before. Hopefully this is a one off.

It's an organic plant substance that contains some nutrients and water. In a closed container you'll get humidity. That's all the conditions lots of contams want. That mold is obviously eating it nicely. My guess is it likes it.

This is the coir I use. I mean a lot of coir is coir but I’ve never had a problem with this. For what it’s worth.

it is claimed that coir is pressed at 700*f, but when a little green sprout emerges i have doubts about that. and i've NEVER had coir that was truly 100% coir. there is always rocks and/or strange leaves, sticks, and sometimes bugs(dead).

Yep eco-earth exspands terribly. You weigh out perfectly your dry ingredients the same and each bucket will be drastically different. I have some big bail brick Envelor I'm trying next. Then I'll probably try the Canna brand in P9's tek

Well.. it looks like I know what I'll be doing after I finish pouring some plates... prepping some more coir...
I'm going to just do it the way that's always worked for me (not leaving it in the stockpot).. prep a couple weeks worth, bag it up in gallon Ziplocks, poke a couple air holes, and keep my fingers crossed that this was a fluke caused by cross contamination 🤞

I've used coir that's been left in my bucket for 6+ months just topping off when needed. The big thing I make sure tho is when mixing up the tubs, nothing that was exposed to the grain touches the coir so ill use different hands for the tub being made and the bucket of coir etc. Some cross contam like that is all I could think of too since everything I've read on here points to coir having no nutrition...

Coir can grow shit all on its own. Those die hard "it's never the coir " types are just plain wrong.
I've had bad luck with eco earth and grow it! brand coir many times. Switching the coir helped in both those instances.
Thing is you said it sat for a week, well if you had spawned to it the contam likely would have shown up after a week and ruined that grow.
Maybe it was a stick or seed husk or whatever but regardless all coir is not equal and some brands will screw your pooch.

That's why I don't trust bucket tek alone. I do bucket tek then divide it up into gal ziplocks, then atmosphere steam it at 165°F for a bunch of hours.

Ahaha I wish! After reading thru everyone's replies tho I realize I'm most likely getting lucky it hasn't contammed out. Just realized that even tho coir is supposedly non-nutrious that doesn't mean there isn't random other stuff in there when it was made that could mess it up. Especially from different brands.

Coir definitely has nutrients in it. I dunno why people say it doesn't.

That's kinda my logic for letting it sit (plus it's convenient)
who knows if it happened at all before I started doing it this way.. but you're right, it probably saved me from trashing my grow this time

Nothing is wrong with it really. It just doesn't expand nicely imo. You can see the bricks in the pack are different thicknesses too so you gotta weigh it out for sure.
