It's not a real flowhood (clean bench) but it works as a makeshift one. (much in the same way that a lot of DIY hoods are as well)
The main obvious difference is there is no HOOD or clean workspace. It's just open faced where a clean bench has a enclosed workspace that works as a tube that the air must flow through in a laminar fashion. An open faced hood will have a barrier of turbulence at all edges.
Technical difference doesnt have a whole lot of real effect if you are careful though.

Lost a couple of ghost cakes this morning to an encompassing gray mold. Caught it kinda late. Just looked like thing tomentose myc over coir, but it was actually just gray in color. Pinset looked decent on one, but oh well! I have another cake that’s pinning well and a tub.
Hopefully, due to how late I caught it, it won’t spread further. This is why we start new projects frequently. Things happen.

Gray can be green that hasn't sporulated yet. Glad you caught it regardless.

Ah sorry I would absolutely post it for you, but I’ve already buried them! If they wind up fruiting I can show that. I don’t think they will, just because the dirt I had was very dry. But next time I’ll make sure to catalogue the situation. Confident this won’t be my last contam lol.

I think some of the benches are just FFUs built into them with air ducting. I like one where there's holes around hood edges that draw air in so it makes a curtain of air to prevent air coming into the workspace from outside the hood

No that sounds like a Baker Edgegard which is certainly not just an FFU with ducting built into it. I've owned a couple of them personally.
For one thing it has a substantial plennum in it and the return air ducting and also utilizes a different fan design and a different filter type. All in all it's way different than a FFU in how the air is getting there.

Oh ok that's cool! I was definitely just making assumptions based on it's looks. I wouldn't mind owning one someday....if I can ever get things working again lol

Which would you guys suggest investing in? I was going to start saving to build a flow hood but if FFU is a viable alternative I wouldn't mind going that route.

definitely get a FFU they are great.
I have to take a wall down and use a truck and a friend or two to move my hood. You can put a FFU in the backseat of a car by yourself.

I say FFU also. Best quality you can afford. So ebay Chinese ones, used ones, a whisper from terra universal, a CleanPro or if you got the cash get an Envirco® MAC 10

Help!
How bad is this? Was noticing plate transfers going worse lately, and then I found this
Is this the HEPA filter that's damaged?

few months, probably good. Few years, probably not.
Next time put them somewhere not hot if you can. Any temp above freezing is good. Room temp is OK, fridge may be better, but not if they get damp.
If properly stored, spores can last 10+ years. Nothing wrong with giving them a try. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they are still viable. I have used spores that were 2+ years old. I'm sure many have.

Definitely a damaged HEPA filter. You can disregard it if it doesn't affect your work. Otherwise someone here might know a way to fix it with like silicone or something I dunno Otherwise it's a pricey thing to replace.

Idk anything about filters but it seems like it would be ok. Or at least if you worked anywhere other than right in front of the damage.
I’ve been starting to wonder about mine lately. Coming up on 2 years and kinda seems like at least the pre filter might be coming up on the end of its life. There’s a huge dirty area where the intake is but the front filter is pristine looking still and no issues, so

Your filter should last a decade easy. Pre filters should be changed regularly though

The point of a laminar flow hood is that it produces a laminar flow of sterile air. That little puncture may disturb the laminar flow. Turbulence is your enemy, because it has the potential to draw contaminants from outside the laminar flow.
It's such a small little defect though. I personally think you're probably alright. I used a flowhood for a long time that had a few little blemishes, such as that one.
