nektar61,
Thanks v much for taking the time to reply. If I can get me head round the image posting logistics I'll post sum pics (these were the best I could do, sorry).
I should have clarified earlier. N00b to shroom growing: plate or broth > pfTek &/or monotub. Not so noob to aseptic technique & all things agar & broth. The growth of off an old shroom cap did take me several plate transfers to isolate a pure mycelium. I then grew up that mycelium in honey broth (cos I had nothing better at the time). With that I did brf & verm pftek & started with popcorn "grain jar". pktek seems to have done well - I'm on me third flush, might go for 4. By time I was on second pftek flush popcorn had fully colonized. I used compost for the monotub because it was the easiest thing to get my hands on. The picture of the "cake in jar" was from some jars I did just to use up what was left over from the monotub compost substrate prep.
So, hopefully I got cubes from that old shroom, hopefully my pics are good enough for an identification? A positive or negative id would be much appreciated.
With respect to the monotub. I was asking about the compost just cos I have got some left over and didn't want to waste it. I was also worrying about growing on compost, in case it might give shrooms with a lower psy* level, compared to what you'd get off coir based medium? Or if the compost might contain added chemicals that might be metabolized by the shrooms into something harmful?
Either way I got a monotub with odd looking shrooms. @cozmyc called them "aborts". Are they all bad? Have they got anything good in them (are they worth drying out)? Should I rip them all out and hope for a second flush - with the monotub holes not blocked (with micropore tape)?
Just to add I'm obviously learning here so I'm not really sure what I should be asking! Any/all help/advice appreciated.
thnx

Just lightly twist them off like you would any mushroom. Yes you can trip off aborts. Yes they are worth drying and should be added to the pile.

Hey guys, trying my first run of whole oats instead of wbs and I was wondering if oats generally takes a little longer to colonize. Should i just be more patient or do I need to alter my prep? Curious because I want to make more jars very soon and don't want to remake mistakes if I did on these.
These are what they look like on day 5 from agar. Not terrible but the growth definitely seems lacking compared to my previous wbs jars.

I'm sure I'm just being a noob and patience will do the trick but you guys know how it is when trying a new method the first time... Reassurance/improvements are very helpful!

That growth looks typical of my experiences with oats.
The foil can come off when you remove the jar from the PC.

Cool I did not know this is there a point where aborts aren't safe? Like got to hot and got kinda slimie caps? Thanks for the insight

What's the point supposed to be of foil on top of jars in the PC? I don't do it and have no issue that I could see it fixing.
I'm wondering if it's one of those things like gypsum...things that Stamits added 20 years ago because it just sounded good but that most TCs don't do now.

I think the reasons people still use foil are to keep the filters from getting wet during the cycle and allow movement of jars while keeping the lid portion sterile.

Yes the lids will hold pooling water without a cover.
Some filters may be hygrophobic but if you don't cover polyfil you're gonna have a bad time.

Hope everyone's doin' well around these parts. I've been gone for a couple months dealing with some (a bunch of) shit in my personal life. But, it looks like everything is calming down enough that I'll be able to get back at it soon!
I just wanted to pop in here real quick and thank Fresh Prints ( ) but also to give a vague explanation for my mysterious leave of absence. But then again, is it really uncommon to NOT have a bigfoot sighting?
I've got about 20k posts to read through but as soon as I knock that out I'll get back to shit posting lol.

Thanks for the advice, I'm hoping you may be able to assist further. I took out the easy stuff and buried the rest of the surface mycelium under the lawn Some of the aborts I put aside for drying had a "wet"/damp core (as per photos), yet were solid enough at handle and didn't disintegrate. Are these still OK for (dried) consumption? thnx

Dried well, they should be fine. They may have lost some potency though

Also, given this is my first time doing this (spore/mycelium > fruit body), and i agar grew off a random dried baggie, do these look like cube aborts*? thnx
PS tbh my only previous experience of "psy_shrooms" is fresh/dried semilenciata

tbh dunno, I'm just (mostly) following directions from "The Psilocybin Mushroom Bible" Haze & Mandrake. They advise doing pftek in (mason/jam) jars w/o lids, covering with foil and topping off with autoclave tape, in a cross. Inoculation is a syringe (spore/broth) to the four tape corners.
Regarding the shroom I isolated, from the pix would you say it's a cube?
thnx

Is this from your experience?
I don't use foil and haven't for some time now, poly or mp tape. No difference in the resulting jars but I also used foil for many years.
