Yeah Spitball's quick rye prep, exactly. I've adjusted it slightly because I found it I followed it to the letter my grains were slightly too dry.
I don't get any clumping, no. When I pull my jars out of the PC I give them a quick shake and then let cool. No problems at all. I wonder if the quality of grain affects this. I buy organic rye grain from a supplier in the Midwest and I've always had great success. I don't even rinse before my prep, I just dump dry rye into the hot water and let it soak.

That shake right after PC'ing is likely what keeps a clump from happening. Us bag folks can't do that... bummer. Thanks for reporting!

Can you not seal while it's just cool enough to handle and then massage grains around?
Haven't properly played with bags yet tbh. Gave them a try back when I had a 1x2 and failed so I've been scared of them ever since
I have 12 grain bags in the cupboard that I made up a couple months back but they never made it past being removed from the PC.
I did have small patches of moisture in said bags so on my next cycle I was aiming to change soak and boil times to avoid this, but if I couldn't I was going to seal and shuffle grains to distribute moisture as soon as possible.

Oh shit of course! I know some people inflate their bag with the flow hood, shouldn't that work? Or is that at a different part of the bag process?

Yes that would work. But then you have a sealed bag that you have to open to inoculate, or make some sort of port or shoot through the side.

I made a thread about this here but I figured this thread gets a lot of traffic and I may get a better response here..
I'm trying to figure out what varieties/phenos are "culture only"... I've got an opportunity to get a couple hard to find cultures, and I don't want to waste a pick on something that I could just grow from spores.. problem is I have a very limited knowledge of what varieties fit this category..
I'm picking Starry Nite APE for sure, but other than that the only ones I can think of or know anything about are Enigma and Omni..
Anyone have any recommendations of "culture only" varieties/phenos?

If you don't decide to toss.. it's a good anecdotal experiment.Quote:

Yeah, i would think the threads are enough to overcome a quick shake.

At least you didn't do what I did the other day. I did the same thing as you, but my lid was especially loose and it started to pop open when I shook it... it only popped open a tiny bit for a few seconds, but it ended up getting trich

At least you didn’t do what I did… I knocked a butter knife into a blender as I was walking away( plastic blender!) I heard the worst crunching noise and the wall of the blender exploded everywhere! Shit was all over the floor. What a mess!

How do you guys move your jars from the pressure cooker to the sab? Doesn’t this need to be done with sterile technique? Do they need to remain sterile after inoculation?

I open my pc on the stove. Move jars to the master box they come in at the store.
Store em in a shelf. Grab and inoculate when needed. Wipe with iso before bringing inside the sab

I’m gnarly and just try to move so fast the contamination’s can’t catch me.ha ha For real though, even with my agar work… it works pretty well surprisingly, although a glovebox or flow hood would be ideal.
I kinda like finding different contamination when they do pop up. One time a agar plate got all kinds of blue slime dots…

Like mushboy I just take em outta the pc and move them to my table then wipe with alcohol before they go in my sab. They don't need to kept in sterile conditions. The jars have filters that keep the contents sterile but the outside doesn't have to be. With pftek the "filter" is the verm barrier, in grain jars people use sfd's, polyfill, ship's, and some do no mod lids but as long as what's inside the jar stays sterile you're good to go. Once you inoculate you're good to have them on a shelf or wherever really. I wouldn't suggest throwing them in a rats nest but they'll be completely fine in a non sterile environment.
