FYI if you have a vacuum sealer (I do, for long term storage of shrooms), you can use it to seal swab packs. Need to cut the swab down so it's not sticking out the last half inch, but if there's nothing in the way of the end, a vacuum sealer will pull air out of these and melt the ends shut.

that’s how I started storing my personal ones for over the summer to use in the fall (or just ones I want to try and keep for years etc). Put solid tape over the spores too to help with light deterioration.

Here’s an added benefit for drying out cultures
You can also transfer the grains to sterile swab packs.. for further storage

They start to revive on agar in 2-3 days
I know ppl (bigfootscreepyuncle, I think?) are just leaving a few grains in the bottom of their spawn jars and putting the lid back on and drying them out that way. As long as you get them dry sterile and keep ‘em that way, they’re good to go
Great info for us retards faht as always
What's the longest stored grain you have revived with this?

Continuously dry.. little over a year but if I was going longer, you can easily add a bit of water to the grains and they’ll suck it right up.. let it start growing again a little bit and dry it out again. Idk the limits of time but with a little bit of upkeep, I’m sure it could last multiple years

Now I want a vacuum sealer it was already on my "shit to get" list, but I hadn't thought or sealing swabs this way.

Is there any benefit to getting grains to the right hydration level or downsides to underhydrating. I always underhydrate so i dont have to strain and so they dont burst.

It is species-dependent. Some like the grains a bit more dry, but most prefer them a bit on the wet side. I always get some burst grains and it's never a problem. Just ignore it if it's like 10% or so.

Too dry may not sterilize properly from literally being insulation.

A more massive bag of grain would be the problem, particularly if the steam can't penetrate into it because the top is folded "airtight"

So I've been battling oats here in the 8% Rh desert. This last time around the jars I lost smelled like booze. So that means it started to ferment I would assume so does anyone know what could be the cause of this? Not pc'ed properly or too wet or hell idk thanks

Question:
Need to boil up a bunch of water in PC to bulk prep CVG. Concerned about grain residue leeching into the water as it's been used for soaking grain.
Would a good scrub with dish soap do the trick or should I scrub and then run a PC cycle?
(Normally go cold tap water route - but I have a bag of vermiculite I left open - I honestly bet it'd be fine but I'd rather be safe than sorry, so the whole lot is getting the boiling water treatment)

I'd imagine the former is sufficient for most cases (dish soap) unless you're trying to actually sterilize the inside of your PC which would be overkill for this purpose in my opinion.
Unless someone has a dedicated pot that is just for boiling water I'd imagine most of us are in the same boat here with regard to using pots. You should be just fine with the soap.

I avoid using my PC for grains for that same reason.
Give it a really good scrub
