If that's 7 days I would say not amazing. Looks slow, but could be genetics as well. But could be fighting contam alsom the pics do suck ass as well, but you know this. They actually look like the same pic.. Me, at this point ide say shake it, fuck it, if that's what it looks like after a week might as well.
Might go back and check your prep and sterile work, even your PC cycle and whatnot.
U less that's like APE or some albino, maybe PE, or unless your agar was like barely colonized before you cut a wedge and put it in, after a week, I'm going to say start more, always start more, and just keep an eye on that knowing it's probably bacterial at least. And if it did happen to colonize after like 3 or 4 weeks haha, just hydrate a little coir and microwave it, or bucket Tek it or whatever, and case the whole jar. Idk. My bets it's bacterial, if it were mild youde probably see something by now.

Lol that pic is a little worse.. kinda..
But it actually looks more like mold their, how it's super matte puffy like and almost looks grey at the ends.
I swear if I zoom in it almost looks like a little green spot....... ...???
And even a little yellow atop the mound. But it's another horrible picture.

I have recently made two attempts to do this, one with shitake grainspawn to multiple logs in a large shoebox, and one with lots of serbica grainspawn surrounding a fermented log, then topped with coir outside.
Im expecting the log to be the contam factor here, but does anyone have some thoughts on why this will work/not work or why we dont do it like this
That's a good question, and honestly I would expect it to work. Did your attempts fail?

Idk what eats Tek is but ide suggest a standard boil and dry, like bod does as well. Your grains could be too dry..
****
And at a quick look at eats Tek the main variable will probably be the ambient temperature you let the grains sit in the boiling water. Like if it's 100 degrees outside and you let them sit in that boiling water for 45 min compared to if it's 20 degrees outside and you let them site in the same boiling water for the same amount of time, in the circumstances of the latter you may find your grains underhydrated because the temperatures dropped too quickly. Also if your using a lid. Idk, barely skimmed it

Sounds like it's not dry yet. Fatties or dense fruits can take more than a day in the dehydrator especially if the RH where you live is very high.
Yeah I figure it’s just not dry yet, but it’s confusing me a bit that the difference between different fruits of the same size and harvest can be that different in drying time. Also have some dense 50gr/5gr fruits that dried into something solid, but then this one just remains soft and becomes crumbly.

Not a big issue though, happens to like one fruit once in a while and the rest all dry fine.

Found a post by inocule who said that the exact oats im using From tractor supply producers pride oats (not for racehorses) only work 1 out of 3 times I don't like that 66% failure is not acceptable so I hoping that's not the problem so trying to diagnose any other problems before trashing a brand new bag of oats
Here is a quote from inocule post NOTE/WARNING: The producers pride oats from tractor supply worked well for me 1 out of 3 times. The other two bags, I believe came pre-infested with weevils and were also extremely bacterial, neither of which I noticed until it was far too late. I recommend looking for race horse oats, as they're reputed to be cleaner and less prone to bacterial problems than the producers pride whole oats. I'm talking the kind of bacteria you really can't afford to fuck around with. Culture ruining awful shit. Throwing away 30 jars of grain, all with agar wedges in them that simply refused to leap off onto the grain is not a fun time. - 4/15/2016
The mycelium actually looked like it formed around the grains not in them if that makes sense

So first grain jars fail. So for round 2 the paper towel test does this look about right. url=https://files.shroomery.org/files/22-22/430616131-IMG_20220603_182645.jpg][image]https://www.shroomery.org/forums/thumbs/22-22/4

Coir holds more water with added verm, so yes. Mushrooms are made mostly of water, more water equals heavier flush.

I have limited places to get grain at a reasonable price in the Bay Area, and since I moved to Oakland from LA I have run nothing but Tractor Supply Producer's Pride Oats. Hundreds and hundreds of pounds of it, maybe thousands at this point. I didn't even use a boil when I moved into a place with no yard, just a hot water soak, strain, hot water again, 24-48hrs depending on what I had going on, strained again, and laid on a giant screen platform with fans. I would agitate the oats spread out on the screens every time I walked by them, so the fan would hit different grains, and once I got it dry enough I'd bag em up and throw them in a couple AA75x's for a longer than usual cycle. No issues with the grain over the course of two solid years of use. I like other grains, but these are cheap and accessible. This prep method I outlined was by no means ideal, but it was what I could swing with the facility limitations I had at the time if I wanted to prep a hundred to two hundred pounds at a time in a little space with little ventilation. What I am driving at here is that you can make them work, I assure you.

Wild Aussie, I do no prep on oats from Tractor Supply with no issues, 10ml water per Tbsp oats. I PC 90 min for sizes up to a myco qt and 120 for larger bags. Maybe slightly less water for a larger bag. The grains should just barely float. It works for barley also.
Your grain water in the fridge is fine short term put it in the freezer for longer.
I leave my grain jars, bags etc in the PC unopened until I'm ready to use them. The exception is 1/4 pint no pour agar which once cooled gets put on a shelf until needed.
Good luck!
Edit: most likely your grain water needs to be diluted before making LC or agar with it. A complete guess, maybe try a teaspoon of grain water in a pint of water for LC??? Maybe even a quart of water?
