Ive been beating the shit out of my coir woth a mallet, beet working better than a hammer and screw driver even. Might try to mallet it then put it through a mulcher so it's alot more handleable. Ide like to be able to scoop dry coir and use it with my water meter for bag teking with my steamer.
The coir hurt me. The germ hurt my wallet and time.
Mushrooms don't seem to care about texture as much as you guys ha

I use verm because I use different brands of coir and the verm is a safety blanket to ensure I dont squanch up my field capacity.
Id also rather not have to cut coir blocks into pieces just so I can "use more coir." Throw a brick, few quarts of verm, and some hot water in a bucket, and call it a day.

I tried to bring this 'is verm needed' topic up earlier. Verm is expensive, large, and another shopping trip I don't want to have. I am about to use it for some tests... because I'm having fun pushing the limit of how much wet I can run my tubs now that I have clean spawn.
I have been using coco bliss for over a year... and I measure, and do not need to adjust because the product is so consistent.
Wished I had a 2 ton press to smash a coir brick... I have a huge screwdriver and pry it all open quietly and mostly with elegance.

Your entire argument is 'I can't get off my ass to go and buy it from the store'.

Does anybody use a flowhood while there’s a fan or ac running in the room?? That’s gotta be ok right??
It’s getting too hot to work now, I’ve got mine in a bedroom with a window ac unit and the hood is across the room with the back facing the ac unit.

But yes, I got some major lazy going on.

Can you just get the room chilly and shut off the unit while you do sterile work?
Is there a reason it needs to be running 24/7?

Bandsaws are horrible for coir. Unless you hate your bandsaw. Don't do it. Rocks happen. Huge screwdriver for the win.

That’s what im considering doing, but for the next three months it’s going to be around 115 in the afternoons and never go below 90 even at night. The second the air goes off you can just feel the heat rising up 😂

Yeah I’ll always favour CV over just straight coir. I know what you mean about the texture, makes the sub more ‘fluffy’ I feel. Aids in water retention also. Plus I can get 100L for the equivalent of about $40 so it a no brainer really!

My question is this. Does a quart of hydrated verm hold more water than a quart of coir, and if not, then whats the difference from adding more coir?

That's a huge no actually. It's going to cause turbulence throughout the room and potentially push contams into you flow. What the big guys do is have their hoods setup so they intake air from a air conditioned room, which can be relatively simple, I've also considered doing this, but I like the idea of recirculating air and saving life on the filter, but it does get hot as a mofk, I am fairly close to cutting a hole for intakes, but idk I would want it to be like its own room that has its own filtered intakes.

Like meat, you have to cut som coir blocks the right way. You have to sort of cut alongside the "sinew", rather than trying to cut it in two. Ill stick a knife inside the block, and tear off thin slides of it as i gradually fill coir into the hot water. If I do it the wrong way, it resists me and its incredibly tough. If I cut correctly, it just comes off with little resistance.
Last batch of coir was from NL and it was very easy to work with.
