This makes no sense.

Fixed that for you.
If it stops growth, why would it be on top?
he’s saying the spawn against the sides of the tubs only grows in one direction but if you put it in the center it grows in every direction outwards.
I get the concept but I don’t think it would make any measure-able difference…keep the ideas coming tho!

I think he's under the impression that it would stop side pins because it wouldn't colonize (or something like that) and that it would promote growth only coming from the top/center..
Shroomduck, if my interpretation of your theory is correct, unfortunately an extra layer of spawnless-substrate around the edges won't accomplish what you're wanting. The best ways to limit growth to the top surface area is to keep your surface conditions optimal. Also, you can use a liner.

I wasn't really concerned with sidepins, I was only thinking of maximising mycelial growth. The chunks of mycelium are going to WANT to grow in every direction, so when you add an outside layer your providing it room to do so. Most of the mycelium is in the middle somewhere and this only provides a small boost for the chunks on the outside touching the bin. I'm just thinking optimal growth with no consideration for pinning with this idea, so there very well could be problems with it.

I'm pretty sure WyoMX answered your question..
also, it's really difficult to see what's going on in your pictures.. so, if you're still unsure, I would recommend taking some clearer pictures with better lighting and maybe you'll end up getting more of a response.

Still unsure what 'boost' you are shooting for. The mycelia is evenly spread throughout the substrate, not mostly in the middle (unless you top layer)
But prove us wrong! Do a few side by side comparisons with isolates and get back to us. But I think if you were looking for confirmation on your concept, you aren't seeing it here.

I get what you're saying duck, I think I got you! Hopefully I can word it correctly... Look at it this way. When you put your spawn to substrate, yes, the mycelium will want to grow in every direction if you allow it to. The colonization has already happened in the jars as far as food is concerned, and the substrate is going to give it a surface to grow ON, right? So at this stage, you are able expand the surface area for your mycelium to explore - is this how you're looking at it? If so...
The mycelium that is venturing out away from the original spawn is looking to either eat and grow, or drink and fruit. Once you put the spawn in with the substrate and are wanting to fruit it, you want everything to grow upwards, and no longer 360 like before in the jars. My hypothesis would be that you wouldn't be expanding the mycelia in the way you are visioning - as equaling more expansion = more fruits.
The fate of the colony has been determined inside the jar. Now, you want to provide it proper conditions and guide the fruiting process along, and upwards of course. IF, that's the goal?
Hopefully some other's can co-sign for you - and I hope my thought process helped something to click somewhere in your thoughts.

How do you when you need to dunk your substrate in SB since was dunking before was dry enough so messed up second flush I just harvested a flush still a few pins do I let it go for a couple more days until the weight is significantly less then dunk? Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge

TY for the well thought out response! One piece of info I should have included is that I plan on allowing the spawn ~10 days to colonize the substrate before introducing fruiting conditions. The reason for that is because I only have a small amount of spawn to work with.
