I did extensive tests on coir vs manure and found no difference. Genetics holds the key to potency. Substrate may make a difference but not a big one.

I was driving through a small town on my way to go fishing yesterday and saw a “grain elevator/co-op store.” They had 50lbs bags of winter rye for $18. It looks really clean too. Is this a good price, at about $0.36 a pound? It is way better than what I pay online for it, so regardless, I’m happy. It is going to be a very productive summer.

This has happened with four different mss on three different batches of agar. Finally got a little bit of myc to do a transfer with two of the syringes. Guessing it’s contaminated syringes. Any ideas?

How intensely does the bin for a monotub need to be cleaned? Ive been reviewing all my outdated processes the last few weeks and have a few of these ready to go. I generally just clean them in the hottest tap water my shower will allow with plenty of Dawn dish soap and a toilet scrubber, anything additional needed?

What did you find was outdated and what was it replaced with? Just curious

Boy where do I start? Wasn't using agar for syringes, had my pastywhyte bins made with the holes AT surface level, using 8 quarts spawn:1 bucket CVG (reading this was WAY too high a ratio and probably led to sub being dried out), had a fan sitting in the corner of the room that I ditched - also stopped daily misting on monotubs as the fan seemed to be the reason they were drying enough to need misting, I was harvesting many times/day for fear of spores dropping and boosting chances of contams on my surface (also outdated info and am currently getting 2nd flushes on bins with heavy spore drops).

Also picked up a good tip to leave ~1in of liner to allow you to pull the whole mono cake out at harvest time + use an electric turkey knife to cut down harvest time.

Lots of good updates, excited to see the fruits of all this labor on the coming tubs.

Yeah this looks like a classic case of a dirty syringe. You can try the BRF puck tek

Oh ya. I'm paying.like 20 right now for wheat, could get oats for 19. It depends where your at too. Like if your on a big city on a coast where there's no farms like me that sounds about right, some people who live out in the sticks can get 50lbs for like 6-10 easy. Rye is usually a bit more expensive too. From what I heard from the guy at my farm store rye isn't for cattle, ever, because it can produce cyanide if left out. So with that said I guess all the is either for humans or cultivation, maybe why it's more expensive...? But solid.

I'm stilll working on grain from two years ago but I bet that is a decent price considering how fucked up everything is right now.

So I just figured this out and I have to share.

Mushroom media online actually has the cheapest bag prices after shipping, at least when you order 1000. Surprisingly because I think alot of their products are overpriced.

What would the best burner for my 41q AA be?

Best burner for that would be low pressure propane in the 20k btu range.

This one is cool and it's made by Vulcanus I mean come on https://the-livart-group.myshopify.com/products/vulcanus-v-l01-low-pressure-cast-iron-burner-with-csa-propane-regulator-and-hose

I have something like that actually. But propane really?

Why not electric? What about a cadco? I feel like even on the lowest setting on a fire burner it would continue to build pressure.. idk I guess so.. but I hate getting propaneeeeeee. And I already have to for grain..

Really?!

Also, why the fuck do we add yeast to agar and shit?! Somebody please

I've been seeing some wierd shit under a microscoe

Yeast extract is spent brewing yeast. Lots of vitamins, not supposed to use live yeast.
I have used gas on my 31qt AA and it does not keep building pressure on low. I am interested to get an electric burner though so like to hear what people are using.

Edit: you can get yeast extract at health food stores

240v electric 2600 watt (standard big burner on real stove) is juuust enough to run a 941 without it taking forever but it takes a while. A Cadco 1500 watt will take forever to get there but work. Cadco is only "designed for 15 lbs" though.

2600 watt = 8,871 BTU, 1500 watts = 5,118 BTU Ideally you want at least 15000 BTU for a cooker this size. They don't even fit on an 8" burner very well.

Anything more than about 20-30k btu is too much and will lap over the sides and melt bags. So just keep it turned down if you have a bigger one.

I use a 240v 2600 watt electric burner for my 941 and find it barely sufficient, takes a lot of tweaking over the cycle. It even has a heavy duty canner element and everything. 941 does best with gas.

Word sandman. Thanks.

And Mr blue shrooms, you have me guessing every MYA recipe I've ever seen. Idk if I've ever seen a write up from a TC with extract used.

I mean yeast should be able to form endospores right?

Pretty sure I samples a agar plate that had yeast added to it and it was budding lol... Uhhhh?!

Input on this would be great.

I could see it maybe being okay. But say after adding to grain, then a G2G and then to heavily supped bulk ... Idk. Seems problematic.

I know but idk maybe I should just ask d3 what he thinks about it. I've used itany times in the past as well, with full success.

But like I said it could be different with other variables at play. Inoculation grains with a agar made with heat and spawning to coir is much different than making a agar with yeast, adding it to LC which might have yeast, going to grain, then G2G then to say master's mix, would be a good example. Alot of time for the yeast to really grow and potentially become a problem, is what I'm wondering.

Also I'm wondering if the visual characteristics that is obviously gained from adding yeast to agar could be similar to what you see mycelium do on grains when it encounters bacteria to come extent, a much more rhizomorphic, ropey growth.

Really need to find a way to see if the yeast is indeed aurving the cycle.

Also if it weren't then it kinda defeats the purpose right?

I just moved so all my books are still packed. Found the above reference though and I recall it being specified in several mycology books.

D3 uses nutritional yeast, same thing as extract.

I shit you not, I just cracked a beer

And what it said under the lid.

Tf. My wife's said " Labrador retrievers " lol, they always say something different.

Does that link specify why yeast or is it just a recipe?

I know plenty of people who do it. Ide have to find it but I'm pretty sure there's like a 12+ year old agar thread by someone solid that had MYA at the top. Like it had a whole bunch of recipes. And I've use it often.

But although less visually appealing, could it have benefits to non yeast contain agar... That's where I'm at.

I'm willing to take it out, out of fear of it causing problems. Unless I can find some literature on its benefits specifically.

Any helps appreciated.
