hehe Yea I recall trying to explain to a rando customer what vermiculite was when I asked about it in front of her.
It's a rock but it's fluffy soft and it's volcanic you know? uhhh yea.

Hi All, New, to cultivation apart from a failed grow of subaeruginosa, which i account for letting it dry out or too wet, i left it outside for the cool conditions, managed to get by with contamination, by removing most of the good myc.
Anyway i am now onto cubensis, believe these are easier to grow.
From reading around it appears pre made agar plates can arrive with contamination, extra expense if you need to isolate contamination, so i am considering LME agar, appears they sell DME (dry malt extra light) on a brewery website
We got the prints from wild cubensis (not the best examples), after a very long trip around our area, despite a very wet summer, and autumn there has been very little shroom activity.
Amazing how covid has made things in short supply, appears the Ball Mason jars are sold out but managed to find some Kerr 1/2pint (240ml) jars.
I plan to build a SAB this time, wayyy too dangerous my last set up with plastic which caught a light (partially lol)
Appears a PC is needed, i assume the Monier CrockPot would not be a substitute for a PC.

Has anyone used this brand of coir before? My usual source was sold out, and I happened to see this at Walmart... I've seen a few posts saying some brands don't work properly. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 and hoping this type isn't on the shit list.

Cool. Thanks! I got the same vermiculite too. Not a bad deal as far as price goes, but I like to mix it with some medium grade if the local hydroponics supply store has it in stock..
Do you happen to know the measurements you use for your shoeboxes? How much of the coir and how much h2o? ... If so, it might save me from a bit of guess-work.

standard $2 Sterlite 6 QT shoebox
I did not keep a good record for these boxes but basically 50/50 and field tested for water. So guess work will be involved....sorry. This coir in bag is a lot wetter already and I ended up adding more of each to make up for way wet test.
Basic rule that seems to work for brick coir is "200g coir to 1000g(1L) water"
I would start at 600g to 700g of h2O to pasteurize and the add to get your preferred wetness. (read/watch everybody's tec) Seems that many pick a bit dry as it is easier to add than take away.
I would wait for the elders to pick apart my post and follow their recommendations, that is what I am going to do!

I guess the coir shortage hasn't hit my area yet. Even in obscure stores I'm finding affordable bricks in the gardening sections.

I find it interesting. I keep reading about how tescos doesn't have sunflower oil and shit yet i havent seen any kind of shortage yet except for building material. The coir only got about 5% more expensive

Yeah, I guess my area just sucks. There is only 1 store I know of in my area that has agar. Kinda makes me miss living in a bigger city.
I went to every hydroponics & gardening store in my area looking for coir and vermiculite.. the store I usually get it at will special order it for me, but I had a bunch of jars ready and didn't feel like waiting.. I ended up finding a few bags of that Burpee brand at Walmart. Next time I'm going to make sure I have enough supplies ahead of time.

When I first started growing I spent a ton of time trying to find out which type of cube had gold glittery flecks on the caps. When I was a kid the ones we got always had that.
I think it was like 6 months in when I suddenly realized it was just verm flakes dried onto the caps of the shrooms I had been buying

Okay, super new here. I've not got an answer yet and I'd like to be safe before I just let these keep going. I don't know enough to say for myself so I figured I'd get some input from people who know way more than me.
Panaeolus on BRF, I know they're tricky to grow (I didn't when I ordered them) but any input and help would be appreciated. Do they look bacterial or contaminated in any way to you guys?

No they look pretty good so far actually. What kind of pan?
You should jump in here real quick, they can be tricky to fruit.

Thank you! I had posted there too but no response yet. I'm pretty sure they're pan copelandia and pan Jamaican? I think. After I received them I looked them up and found that I should probably spawn to Hpoo/straw but I've never spawned to bulk nor used manure or straw. I was thinking about just attempting to spawn to verm/coir to try it out and see if they'd fruit. I have some cubes started as well so if the pans fail I'll just stick with those for a while lol

Some of the Jamaicans are pretty aggressive, the cake might pin.
I would probably try shredding it to a small manure sub though. There’s a thread called macmerdins pan cakes about making manure cakes for pans too.

I'll check it out. I do have some cow poo that I've had for a while, it's super dry but I read some where that aged poo was better than fresh? Not sure if that's true or not and I don't even know if cow poo would work as well as Hpoo. I don't really have any where to get horse manure quickly either. I'm not looking for a very big flush or anything. Just enough for me and my girl so I was thinking maybe if I could get them to pin on some coir even if they didn't do "great" it would be good enough until I got the things I needed for bigger grows.

The manure should be similar to dirt consistency. Cow works great, I use composted steer manure from the nursery which is also incredibly cheap.

Well the cow poo I have saved is super hard but when broken up it is the consistency of soil. Can I pasteurize the manure with the coir through the bucket tek? Sorry for asking so many questions.
