Now on my do not buy list: Cyco Coco Coir. Usually it's fine but these last 2 blocks won't absorb fuck all for water.

What did they do, grind up the wrong part of the coconut or something? The fuck makes this happen? Once upon a time I got a whole shipment of offbrand coir that was like this and it sucked donkey dicks. All in the trash.

Havent tried their bricks yet but their 50 liter of loose coir bags works well. I think theyre also based in Australia so cost a bit more.
Ive been using Botanicare Cocogro loose coir since ecoearth prices doubled lately, and have been getting better results as well

So can you kill the bac and keep the shroom or just pitch it?

As I mentioned earlier I spawned a few tubs today. My coir/verm prep was off so my substrate came out too wet and I didn't think to correct it (wring out excess water) when I made the first 16 quart tub and 6 quart shoebox so I'm guessing those are too wet. After those two I started squeezing water out and spawned another 16 quart minimono and shoebox, but every time I squeeze water out my sub comes out too dry.
So now I'm wondering - is too wet, or too dry better (yes I know that perfectly hydrated is best)? Time will tell, I'm just wondering what other people think and what to expect. Spawn was clean and rhizo. If it matters the two varieties that were too wet were Yeti and ESS and the two that were too dry were Yeti and Gandalf.

Rather than wring out, add verm? When I prep too wet I get comically small fruits

The whole reason I'm in this position is because I ran out of dry coir and verm when I prepped this batch so my ratios were off and I had to take an educated guess as to how much water to use, otherwise I would have tossed in some verm and called it good.
You're probably right, I just don't want to deal with tiny fruits again lol.
I've also been having to use fine grade vermiculite for a while now and it doesn't hold water nearly as well as medium grade so that has to get factored in as well.

I have actually found verm at a couple of local Ace hardware shops. None in the big box hardware or garden stores.

I can get find grade verm at my local big boxes, or I can get coarse at my local hydro shop but I can't find medium anywhere and I don't want to buy in quantities of 100 liters at a time because I don't think I could even finish one of those bags.
So after I spawned my over hydrated and under hydrated tubs today I jumped on amazon to order another 2 bricks of coir and they're sold out of my brand today was a frustrating day

Not me that is regional, my ace has never carried it.
My local farm store always ordered it from their supplier for me (same stuff as uline, Palmetto) but there supplier can not even get it now at all. Not even back ordered.
The local hydro stores stopped carrying it also.

Could just squeezed the shit out of parts of the coco. Perhaps fully dried it and added it as a drying agent thing.
I think too wet is better if you have spankin beautiful spawn. Not dripping of course.
I think it's more the the pandemic. Its very fucking scawy, i am almost starting to become some sort of prepper. My friend owns a store and has to change prices of items every week cause they keep going up. My natural gas bill got doubled and the farmer man I bought wheat from today told me he didn't use any fertiliser this year cause it was twice, almost thrice, as expensive this year. ಠ_ಠ

not rly a big deal at the end of the day tho, i mean straight coir works too as im sure u know. I've been buying fine lately, since it's all I can find in reasonable volume. u can always just add more to hold more water

Many sites (at least where I'm from) have separate prices for 1 unit, 2, 3, etc, with each additional unit getting cheaper.
@Myc Hunt I read somewhere that it's illegal for prestos to be resold here in the UK, not sure how true that is but it'd make sense due to the pressure regulations. I was thinking more importing from the US but I'll stop being lazy and have a good look myself. :p

Your jar is ready for s2b when you are 100% certain it's 100% colonized.
Left jar looks ready for s2b to my eyes.
Right jar seems healthy. No need to throw it out. Give it time to reach 100% colonization.
You can remove the foil after sterilization.
Thank you! I didn't know about removing the foil. PhillyGoldenTeacher on youtube mentions leaving it on is better to avoid contamination. With the foil on and the lids not fully screwed on there should be enough air exchange according to them.

The lid is not fully screwed on, it's only on there lightly so gas exchange is provided. I'm growing cubes.
I'm doing s2b for the 4 good jars today. The last jar I'll just let it sit for some more time, and if it doesn't do anything I'll throw it away. Thank you all and I'm glad to have found such a welcoming community!

Hi All, New, to cultivation apart from a failed grow of subaeruginosa, which i account for letting it dry out or too wet, i left it outside for the cool conditions, managed to get by with contamination, by removing most of the good myc.
Anyway i am now onto cubensis, believe these are easier to grow.
From reading around it appears pre made agar plates can arrive with contamination, extra expense if you need to isolate contamination, so i am considering LME agar, appears they sell DME (dry malt extra light) on a brewery website
We got the prints from wild cubensis (not the best examples), after a very long trip around our area, despite a very wet summer, and autumn there has been very little shroom activity.
Amazing how covid has made things in short supply, appears the Ball Mason jars are sold out but managed to find some Kerr 1/2pint (240ml) jars.
I plan to build a SAB this time, wayyy too dangerous my last set up with plastic which caught a light (partially lol)
Appears a PC is needed, i assume the Monier CrockPot would not be a substitute for a PC.
