Assuming I have two swabs to work with I just bury one swab in a plate and call it good. If that one doesn't work for whatever reason I'll pluck strands off of the second swab and use it more 'properly'.
Swiping plates with swabs never worked out for me. I think faht dunks a swab in sterile water, rubs it against another swab to dislodge the spores then streaks and gets good result. I still prefer just burying a swab in agar and calling it a day

Well I donβt but I know others that have luck with that method. I make spore solution by rubbing the swabs together in sterile water so I canβt imagine it doesnβt work for streaking

Yeah dry swabs don't work well for streaking, wet ones are fine. I've seen smalltalk complain about swabs before... With a 95% failure rate, I hope you've considered user error

Except in London and California. lol I forget and am always surprised when they ask if I want a bag and then ring it up. At least they are usually nicer bags than what they give you for free around here.
Oregon and Washington now too

If it doesn't have to be swabbed (PE etc) then a swab is definitely sub par to a print. You are rubbing the shit out of the gills and there is going to be bacteria and who knows on there.
I've only taken one swab to a successfull grow shamefully. So many have given me failure including 100% of my own.
Maybe I was rubbing too hard (that's what she said) when taking them or something

Iβm still team fuck swabs and Iβve tried all the tricks, strands, wetting the swab, making a syringe, whatever.
I just took my first swabs the other day. Sometimes itβs necessary, but Iβd much rather put prints to agar than swabs. Swabs gather everything on the gills but prints are just the spores and whatever falls off the gills. Sure foil isnβt as sterile as swabs but the reusabilty of prints makes them a much more attractive option.

I completely agree in that if a variety is printable then a print is superior to swabs, unless maybe we're talking about albinos where you wouldn't even be able to see if there was a print...at the end of the day spores are spores and you can't complain about $free.99
But to say all swabs are trash is stupid. I rub mine pretty damn hard (giggity) and have had several people show me the results they've had with my swabs, in addition to me having good results of my own.
I've even been known to swab a print just so I can help a person out with a variety I haven't run yet. Cuz sharing is caring

I actually swab all prints cause I am too lazy to buy or make a loop. I have only germinated like 15 plates and have only had 1 fail. I must be JESUS.
Also i think impaling pucks is pretty good.

Keep me posted on the ones I sent
I think dry time and a delicate touch is key. I know faht pumps out some clean swabs in open air and letting them dry in their sleeves though, so who knows
I've been sterilizing these copper mugs and letting my swabs air out in front of the hood for an hour or two. I try to be gentle on the gills. Gill fragments are no bueno, but sometimes unavoidable.

Well shoot - this is the first time I've heard of gill fragments being bad, but it makes perfect sense. I'll attempt to develop a lighter touch when I'm swabbing from now on. I say 'attempt' because I have a caveman brain, my solution to a problem is almost always the 'bigger hammer' and I am what wrestlers call 'country strong'.

I've had plenty of success with swabs that were jack-hammered into the gills, but these days I try to avoid picking up any actual material. Trying to stabilize a couple of things right now and I never feel 100% certain if I'm actually germinating spores, or if I just took a clone of some gill tissue. A light touch makes me feel more confident that I'm only picking up the stuff I want.

I stopped having bacterial and mold issues when I stopped sliding the swabs out of the pack the way that they went in. Instead, I cut them close to the cotton and use tweezers to roll them and get em wet with agar before burying them in the plate. I use 9g LME, 7g agar and 500mL distilled water for my germination plates. I havent had a swab not germinate in more than a year.
I do prefer prints over swabs any day though.
