So I've never really cultivated gourmet ones except colonize jars, be lazy, and have mushrooms sprout out straight from the grains.
What I have right now is some very resilient King Oyster mycelium. I got a full QT and a plate good for more transfer, and a bunch of oats.
I have never made bags, although I did buy some that I can test out. I'm just paranoid about them melting, but I got the proper stuff for my 23qt Presto.
I was thinking about getting coffee grains from a nearby shop, but apparently King Oysters do not like that.
1- What is the cheapest/easiest substrate for King Oyster?
2- What does it's pasteurization requirements look like.
3- Monotubs vs Buckets vs Hanging bags? I guess since I have bags I will start with those, just don't know what to fill them up with. One QT grain jar per bag, correct?
4- I know the tub process better, and that seems easier for me to do with my setups. Is it just a case of bucket teking sawdust?
Thanks y'all!
I've never heard of king oysters not liking coffee, as a supplement, if you grow them on wood and sterilize of course.
1. hardwood fuel pellets. supplement as you like.
2. bucket tek if just fuel pellets. sterilization in PC if you supplement.
3. anything works, bags are fine. 1 quart spawn is good if you don't wanna supplement, if you supplement, you can use much less.
4. yup, but not real sawdust use hardwood fuel pellets. if you use real sawdust you should do true pasteurization.
again, no supplementation if you're open air spawning and not sterilizing the entire substrate in PC

Does anyone have filters over their air ducts, do you think they help? If so, what are the best ones to get? I read some people buy bigger filters and cut them up, i’m assuming hepa filters.

I don't think it would matter. I grow in a dusty old house without any trouble. Seems like overkill tbh.

My Presto PC just started making an ungodly loud shrieking sound out of the air vent/lid lock, and wouldn’t get up to pressure while I was trying to PC a couple of bottles of agar. I still let it run for twenty mins. After the pressure dropped I checked the air vent/lid lock and it turns out the assembly was just loose. Would there be any issue with running these two bottles through another cycle?

I can't even say how many times I pcd a bottle. Let it chill out outside. Forgot about it. Found it completely solid, re-pc'd, let the bottle solidify again and so on and so forth until I finally manage to pour the plates

I've read on some recipes they say "don't reheat more than twice" not sure if there is anything to that.

I usually 'can' my leftover agar. Not sure how many times it takes but eventually it is prone to seperation after too many pc cycles. The puck shrinks and sits in a pool of water. It takes a lot of cycles with no problems though.

So I use my flow hood on my wooden desk.. it has some big grooves and scratches from moving my flowhood around.
I am going to get a stainless steel table soon.
I'm wondering if foil tape on the desk might be a good idea until then.. those grooves have me thinking dust n shit could blow up into my work.. maybe.. maybe not. I've not done cult work in months to decide if that's potentially true or not.

Sweet thanks. I most likely was overthinking it.
EDIT:
Switching over to polyfill lids, I think my sticker SFDs were failing me after a couple cycles.
Does anybody mind sharing how their polyfill looks on their lids please?

I wrote this already in this thread, but get that polyfil they sell for aquarium filters. It's really fine and it comes in these nice sheets. Tear out little squares. Super easy to work with and you can make a super tight filter in a few seconds once you get your skills up. Some pillow fillings are a bitch to work with ime.

What are your favorite grain and why?
What’s your favorite LC tek?

Right now I'm running plastic lids with a layer of tyvek covered by a layer of micropore tape. I really like sfd's but I had some fail not too long ago, hence the current setup.
I use wheat cuz it is cheap where I'm at and it's super easy to prep.
I don't fuck with lc but I really like Blenderless LI. Munchauzen has a Tek for it. He is probably one of my favorite TC's. All his stuff is really good, but blender less LI changed my life.

I use a SFD sticker with a couple layers of Micropore on top of that. Wheat, easy prep and dries quicky. I love the SSLC, a little agar with your LC for a thicker LC that coats grains better. SSLC

Lol you aight crack.
I have those stick on sfd's too, been meaning to dig them out. I actually do the same thing with them cuz I read that you put micropore over them. Those stick on sfd's look suspiciously like tyvek too so I figure it is pretty much the same thing either way.

I've noticed moisture will loosen them up, some I have 4-5 layers on.

This mycelium is looking off. I have not been able to check on this tub for 5 or so days. The surface didn't have beads of water so it got a light misting.

The grain jars looked slightly bacterial.
Does this look like mycelium? Maybe the early stages of trich?
