Hi guys
I have some spawn jars going at the moment. All of them have the same whispy looking mycelium...which is a first for me and I'm not sure why. With every other spawn the mycelium has been that nice dense white growth.
I'm sure it's not spiderweb, but is there any reason why this spawn growth has that soft whispy quality about it?

Those jars are contaminated unfortunately, not the mycelium we want in there.

Making my first SFD lids, used polyfil too long. What’s your favorite size hole for SFDs, seems like people have different opinions. It’s as simple as cutting the hole, using a little RTV silicone and making sure the SFD is fully secure?
I have precut ones but will be cutting my full SFDs into smaller ones, from a trusted shroomery vendor.

I drill anywhere from 6mm to 10mm, never had any issues with any, just depends what bit is already in the drill.

I never found silicone attached SFD superior to polyfil for jars. Always found polyfil to be very reliable and even use it as an injection port.
Maybe those sticker ones are handy but a pillow is easier to come by and never let me down.

It's best if you rough up where the silicone will be applied with sandpaper or steel wool. But do it very intentionally because what gets roughed up and not covered with silicone will rust quickly. This will provide a more appropriate surface for the silicone to adhere to.

Semi cultivation related, does anyone have recommendations on house filtration for a reasonable price? I talked to an hvac guy and he said anything more than merv 8 tends to wear the blower of the furnace. Currently swap filters on furnace once a month and started cutting furnace filters and just tape them over floor registers to reduce debris in the living areas of the house. Since the real problem is dirty vents this is the best option I have found. This looks like some real hillbilly shit but is currently my only solution.
Does anyone have suggestions or methods that have worked for them besides building another hepa for the non mush area of the house?

My house ran without a furnace filter for almost 2 years (I didn't realize it, but it happened) and I never had any real contamination issues a bacterial jar here, a rare moldy plate there, but never any major issues. Hell, I only just got my first moldy tub a couple weeks ago. Turn off/block the vents when you're doing sterile work and work on your sterile technique.
Bad sterile technique > dirty culture > bad sterilization > bad environment

How much silicone do you use per SFD. I have these individually cut ones, trying to make sure there’s enough RTV but not too much either… About to post a picture

Should I add silicone around the edge of the SFD as well? Or is putting it on the bottom and sticking it to the lid enough?

Sorry bud I should have stated I'm looking for house filtration, not mushie related, without looking like a hillbilly psychopath with filters taped over all my vent registers. I put a filter over one of my floor registers and the amount of stuff it collected over one month was seriously gross.

I just use entire SFDs as a lid, too lazy to go about cutting holes and sealing them. They make wide-mouth SFDs, so I just plop one on and put a band over it. Don't even bother with foil over it in the PC either. Works perfectly fine every time!

Ayyyyy no worries, sorry I just assumed this was one of those 'all my shit keeps contaminating because I have mold in my air' posts. I (the guy who somehow ran without a furnace filter for 2 years) am clearly not the person to help you with this issue hope you get it sorted out soon!
