I'll work a draft up tonight and go live with it tomorrow. So if anyone else out there wants to take charge of it this year you're running out of time but feel free to speak up lol

Hey you wonderful people of the Shroomery,
I am not sure if thats the right place for my post - I didn`t want to open a new one just for a single request.
I started a journal of my first grow in the "Mushroom Grow Logs and Pictures" section to give something back to the community and help some newbies with questions that could come up during their first grows.
So I posted a couple of pretty basic questions and I would really appreciate your expertise. It seems like not too many people are posting in that section and because of that I am posting the link to my journal here.
Thanks for your help

I read through your thread and everything looks and sounds good man I think you're definitely well on your way to filling your dehydrator! Keep it up!
If you want to see a whole lot of active journals keep an eye on LAGM version 2.022 - it'll be a great place to ask questions, see results, talk shit and have a good time. The rules say you have to start on agar to participate, but agar is stupid easy to learn so don't be scurred if it sounds interesting, there's plenty of us in there happy to help you learn. Plus you already have a PC so why the hell not? Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for your answer!
I thought about participating in the LAGM and I would love to join but my next step is BRF to bulk and after that I start with Agar for sure. I just want to take all the steps because its fun and I like to learn as many ways to grow shrooms as possible.
I poured some plates before and worked with Agar a couple of times (studied biology and had some microbiology courses). So I will be in in 2023 - thanks for creating that thread and spending your time for us btw!
The reason I wanted the answers in my journal is that I imagined that thread to be some sort of comprehensive "how to start growing" journal where questions are answered that likely occur when someone starts his/her first grow. There are other threads with that aim started by TC`s and other people with far more experience than me but I thought a newbie understands best what newbies need.

Shoutout to natedawgnow for the SSLC tek and DoctorMario for inspiring me to try SSLC! Havent even seen how it does on grain yet but both my test jars colonized much quicker then my typical LC!

How can one tell if their bacteria problems are coming from improper sterilization? Using a PC has never been an issue for me, but I moved several months ago and haven't had a successful grow since. The change in elevation was greater than 2500 feet, and I'm wondering if I'm simply not making the grains sterile even though I vent 10 minutes after the pressure lock engages, and start my timer of 2 hours once the psi hits 17?
What are the characteristics of bacillus and clostridium species on colonized grains? Does it look like clear condensation?

I thought I had identified the source of my bacteria a month ago, and now that the 20 or so jars I inoculated over several sessions from different cultures have fully colonized, they all still present this clear bacteria. No other contaminant has presented.

There is a about 1.3 psi difference in absolute atmospheric pressure in 2500 feet of elevation so try knocking your pressure up a few psi to counter this. It could be all you need to do to get rid of your bacteria issues.

That's good to know, but it doesn't help me I'm at 1,100' elevation and usually run my PC at 16+psi, so it appears my bacterial issues lately are coming from either dirty cultures and/or poor sterile technique

Yes, in a few days I'll prep grain again and run it at ~18psi for 2.5hours. Will run my metal modded lids against the old plastic unmodded lids that served me pretty well in the past to test the lid variable as well. And revisit PC operation, sometimes I put the rocker on when they gauge reads 1-2 psi but not pure steam is coming out, more like a sputter.

I wouldn't do unmodded without maybe wrapping the jar lid, with temp fluxes you will have unfiltered air entering the jar... I know some people have done unmodded, but idk too much about that. And your PC will pull a vacuumed so unless you have a stopcock you'll want to consider that..

My first two seasons they worked great until I got mites. You just unload jars while they're hot and allow to cool to ambient temp then fully close lid. I didn't even use foil. The vacuum happens in the jars when you tighten the lid before they've cooled due to the negative pressure.

I'm not talking about it holding a vacuum, I'm talking about it sucking air into you PC, through the unsealed rim of the jar during the cooling process. Honestly thinking about it I wouldn't even use plastic jars again personally, because they aren't air tight. And if your letting them cool completely before closing them even (and remember they aren't even air tight, in most cases not even water tight unless your using a gasket), then as they cool the air/steam is shrinking pulling in outside air to fill the space. The risk of contamination would be less so if you let them cool inside the pc, I know some even put an alcohol clothe over the vent after the pressure hits 0. If I was doing jars still I would use metal lids because of the seal. And if I was going to use plastic lids I would open the pc in front of the flow at zero and wrap the lid or do the same with a SAB as clean as possible, basically treating it like a petri dish.

I vent mine for 15min. I want pure steam coming out if it get's to 14min and big burst of air hit's I'll add 5 min.

Regarding altitude changes I've done a few snow seasons as a chef here in Australia where I've had to cook at 1700m ASL (5500ft). You'd be very surprised how much altitude can affect cook times. Simple processes like boiling water will lose 1C for every 1000 feet. Definitely look at increasing vent time, pressure of your sterilization and possibly even extend your PC time.

That's exactly what im talking about. If the PC is still evolving steam/heat which it is for roughly 30-60 minutes after the pressure lock disengages, there's positive pressure. No ambient air is going in. You take the jar out still warm and once the jar reaches room temp, the pressure is equal inside of it and out. At no point would there be airflow going into the jar. It clearly works for many people, myself included.
And noted Crack and Mista, I'll build up a full head of steam
Already takes about 45minutes from lid latch to 10min after pressure lock, shits taking too long
