I've been worried about similar stuff. I keep running into contams during second flush and wanna get to the bottom of the issue.. I don't boil my water for substrate and the pipes at my place are old and nasty so I assume that doesn't help...
When I first moved in my grow spot and turned on the faucet it spit out a gallon or two of neon green water.

When I was using city water, I'd soak my shoeboxes after the first flush. Now, I'm on well water and I was getting clear-yellow gel in my tubs a few days after soaking. I started soaking and misting with distilled water and there's no more of that stuff.

Do you clean your harvest tools between tubs?

All good.
All my jars were like that for about a year until I made new lids with smaller holes. Then they started colonizing on top too.
But filthy did a thread with just uncolonized top grains and the tub went just as quick as colonized grains.

I've noticed that since I started using wheat. Hasn't been a problem though.

Hey friends, quick question. I have some of these reusable plastic lids for my jars. I feel like I have seen them modded with polyfill and SHIPs. They say βNot recommended for processing.β
So , are they ok for PCing? Just wanted to ask before I waste time modifying them just to melt them during sterilization.

How do people line their shoeboxes? Just open a grocery sack, put it in there, fill with sub/spawn and rock? I don't know why I'm making this such a big deal and a hard concept to wrap my head around lol

I don't use shoeboxes bigfoot but yes I just tear the bag off the roll, unfold it and lay it down so the inner unexposed bit of the fold is facing upwards touching the sub. If you size the tub and bag with each other it requires no cutting, and I do no iso or fussing to it
Apparently they are very clean if not sterile, by virtue of the manufacturing process, but I dunno for sure

Grocery bag fits perfect but it takes a little getting used to. I always poke a couple holes at the rim of the shoebox before flattening the bag out or else air puffs up underneath.

1. Get bag 2. Add non top layer content to bag (grains, verm, coir, etc) 3. Even the mix out 4. Gather the open end of the bag in a bundle 5. Make a cut as far down as smart to do. 6. Press the sub down, you should have plenty liner above sub top still 7. Add the low/non nutritious top layer 8. Press down and compact the whole sub, especially edges 9. If any liner above sub top surface, tampen down
If anyone thinks this is insufficient or have anything to add, please advise.
But that's what I think is sufficient
