Amazing forum here. A quick newbie question:
1. I'm able to do the PDA for my dishes. Is it necessary to pre sterilize (with alcohol or bleach/water) the glass container (e.g. flask) that I'll be using to mix the ingredients together? Or will the pressure cooker part take care of this.

PC kills everything.
Future note iso/bleach do not sterilize only sanitize.

Thank you!
My big ass PC is a couple of weeks away in the mail.
In the meantime, can I use a small electric PC to sterilize the agar? I guess they are not as powerful as a non-electric one....maybe double the PC time?

Ya you can even steam sterilize agar. Liquids sterilize easily.

Iβve used red winter wheat before with success. I mostly use rye though.

I've used hard red winter wheat. It's great and is what is often in birdseed. Never had white wheat so I can't say.
If I didn't have a friend who can't have wheat I'd use what 100% even more user friendly than oats, on level with Milo/sorghum.

I've got super easy access to sorghum - is this a good grain to use? I don't really think i've ever really heard people mention it on here

I picked up some white millet yesterday to try out and I also got a new bag of higher quality oats. The last oats I was using were dirt cheap but really dirty and, well, cheap. When I was walking around the feed store though I noticed a pallet of milo/sorghum so I'll probably be playing with that this season as well.

Sorghum is amazing. It's my favorite grain. It's also called Milo and one of the primary components of wbs.
I rinse it.boil a pot of water, kill they heat and dump in the grain. It's usually ready in 45 mins.

I have issues with oats if I don't make sure like 5% are burst they are under hydrated and go bacterial

Looks like I might be switching to sorghum if this new and more expensive (better quality) brand of oats doesn't help me straighten my shit out. Thanks for the insight!

I like to soft boil milo for about 20 minutes. I don't shut off the heat until they're completely hydrated but I get a lot of burst grain. Jars of straight milo will clump together if a lot of it is burst but if you're mixing it with a bigger grain, it'll be fine.
A friend showed me the milo/wheat mix and I'm lovin it.

I got many burst too when I boiled. That's why I went to a hot soak. If dead set on boiling a rinse after the boil negates clumping. It just slows drying.
Even a cold over night soak and hot rinse works well to hydrate.
If you like Milo and wheat mixed the wild bird seed that Walmart sells in the red and white bag is wheat, Milo, and millet. Once all the sunflowers and corn are picked out it makes great spawn.

The inside of my milo is still bright white and as hard as a rock after 5 minutes. You load those wet?
