I was just going to say that the last time I experienced real bad problems it was oats from a particular source. other brands worked but these were inherently dirty. maybe they were treated with something I dont know. switching brands is what made the difference for me in the end

thanks for the insight! This quarter bag of grain has been sitting in my garage since March, so it should have been replaced anyway. I'll stop by the feed store tomorrow on my way to buy some more plates.

Nice, I feel a little better now. I'm sure my neighbors will enjoy getting a bag of dry grains instead of the usual mush I feed their chickens when I finish brewing a batch of beer lol.
I'm guessing you use oats? If the store has it I'll get some millet and a bag of higher quality oats to see what works best.
So there we have it. I'll start by burning bigger holes in my SAB, adding yeast to my plates, buying new gloves (the ones I'm using now are shit), and changing grains. If this doesn't work I'll quit spamming this thread and start my own 'what am I doing wrong' thread in Getting Started lol. Thanks for all the help guys!

I switch between which ever grain is cheapest at the store since the price fluctuates throughout the year.

You guys ever see anyone out and about and think huh they are also growing mushrooms. Like the guy I saw once buying about 15-20 brown rice uncle bens bags and nothing else.
Or just the other day saw a guy walking down the sidewalk carrying a case of Mason jars and a 5 pack of shoeboxes.
I mean there are probably many other explanations but that's where my mind went.
Well that thought aside just put agar to about 10 master jars and spawned two shoeboxes. Going away for about 10 days for Christmas. Hoping to come back to some colonized jars and boxes. We will see how set and forget the shoeboxes can be.

Thoughts on whether an old PC gasket can be a contam vector?
I’ve noticed my presto leaking some water/steam during the PC cycle. No problem getting to and holding pressure, but as it gets to the venting cycle, there is steam and water drips coming down in some spots near the lid.
Any worries about improper sterilization or contams sneaking in during the cooling?

Try twisting the lid by handle a bit left or right, this helps me

Thanks. I will try that. I know the right answer is to just get a new gasket, but if leaking isn’t a contam risk, I can probably get a lot more runs out of the current one. Once I put the weight on it works fine, it’s just making a mess of my hot plate in the meantime.

Your gasket is shrinking because of its use! Not a bad problem to have definitely order another one or two because the leaking will continue to get worse. I have to replace my presto gaskets every 3-6 months because they shrink and leak.
For a temporary fix I recommend using olive oil to lube up the gasket and that oftentimes will help complete the seal (if you aren't doing that already)

As long as you're getting up to pressure it isn't an issue.

Hey all, what is this?
Rye spawned to CVG, 16 days ago, colonized well and looked like it was about to pin, then these spots showed up on the side. My grain go bacterial after all this time?

Could they be side pins, or is that just wishful thinking? It almost looks the same color as when my PF jars pin before birthing, but not that many spots. It ok if it is trash, it’s a small side project. Appreciate any feedback though.

I could definitely have phrased that better lol - I feed their chickens all my spent grains/slop left over from brewing. We don't have psychedelic fueled poultry roaming my neighborhood although we do have a few neighborhoods around town with peacocks running wild. THAT's a trip when you forget about it and see them again lol. Very pretty birds but loud as fuck and MEAN little bastards
OOoooo yea, bruthur my avatar certainly is the hulkster lol

I saw a guy walking out of walmart one day with a couple cases of jars, a bag of WBS, a bunch of shoeboxes and a tote big enough to make a SAB lol I was like 'i see you playa!'

Those are the start of sidepins... try tamping or compressing the edges a bit more the next time you spawn to boxes... or use a liner...
