Doctor Mario said: I always had a very bacterial problem with oats. It was so minor that I didn't really notice it until I switched to wheat. Haven't had a contam issue ever since. I don't think I can ever go back to oats.
I just inoculated some oats for the first time in forever because they were out of wheat. And ya I think water gets accumulated in the just and causes problems as well. And I don't think they take off as quickly. Usually I'm having some good growth at day 3 and with this batch I can barely see anything, I'm guessing alots going on behind the husks.

Bod has a good oat Tek
To be honest, i don't even think about it, i boil my oats until they burst, drain in a colander over the sink for an hour, load into jars, lids upside down, start up the pressure cooker, let vent for ten, then build to 15psi and start the timer for 2 and a half hours. I've had one contaminated jar with oats and I'm pretty sure it is because of mishandling before making sure the lids were tight.

Definitely buy a good one! I bought a Mirro because it was the best thing I could get new at the time(same price as a Presto, but the preppers had bought them all up). The last thing you want is major injuries or accidental death or abig chunk of your house missing.

Is there a problem with shaking jars prior to 30%? I've got some jars that I suspect have bacteria sneaking around in them and I want to get the myc colonized as fast as possible. The jars are ~15-20% along 8 days after inoculations

Just got 8 jars shaken/busted up and it was quite a bit harder than I expected. My sterile technique needs a total overhaul this season, and quick! My plates haven't looked good this season and these are my first jars of the season and they're already showing signs of bacteria this is gonna be a short cult season for me if I don't get ahead of this soon

If you shake a bacterial jar it usually spreads the bacteria everywhere and makes it way worse.
But it’s better to do it and find out asap.
Shaking early can speed up colonization too if you time it right.

Sounds like a good thread to start

I think starting that thread might be a last resort..I'm not sure if my fragile noob ego can handle it
Seriously though, when I packed up last year I had really nice plates and beautifully clean spawn. I'm working in the same SAB, same 'tools', in the same area under same conditions and I'm getting satellites on my plates, bacterial spawn, my T1s look better than T3s (this is the main reason I know my technique is fucked), etc. Hopefully I'm just rusty and out of practice.
First step is going to be to burn some bigger holes in my SAB - the ones I have now are WAY too small so I'm always bumping the edge or plugging the hole when I try and get my forearm in which just creates air currents

Yea I've been meaning to burn bigger holes since last year but now it's becoming a 'must do' not a 'do it when i get time'. I do work slowly, but maybe I need to pay more attention to it - or just pay more attention all together.
I had a trap shooting coach that once told me to imagine I was shooting underwater with slow fluid movements which helped immensely and it applies to everything. Thanks for that reminder!

I recently cut out the midsection of mine and used a torch to bend acrylic sheet over to give better visibility. I also made arm hole flaps of 4mil sheeting, which I've seen some advise against but none of my dishes have contaminated since the modifications

I'd love to have a window of acrylic or plexi on mine but I can see well enough that I won't go down that road right now. Plus if I get mad enough I'll just buy/build a hood lol.
fortunately I'm not getting contams from pouring plates - I can still fucking do that at least! It seems all my issues are coming at or after T1 - I can germinate plates with no satellites or other issues. I'm going to pour some plates tomorrow so when I PC the agar I'll run my scalpels through there as well I've got ~30 varieties to run this season so I'm going to get this figured out or die trying!
Also, I've seen a lot of talk on here about people saying oats lead to their bacterial issues but this doesn't seem quite right to me. Especially considering the clean spawn I had at the end of last year. Is millet worth the $1/lb compared to the $0.16/lb I pay for oats?? At this point I'm willing to break the bank if it means success

You could try wheat or some other cheap as duck grain. I'm quite partial to wheat.

Grain prices are a drag for me, maybe just looking in the wrong places. I got lucky the last time I got millet for $70/100lb.
How do you store your dishes? I just tape the sides of mine then put into gallon ziplock bag.
Recently did an incense test in the SAB as a refresher. Worthwhile in this case, as I found I could move around more than I was.

No, it wasn't me. I don't want to blame my grain for my issues, especially since I've had good success with them and I know plenty others do as well. I was just thinking there might be an 'easier' grain to work with. But at the end of the day i think I'm just rusty/sloppy and need to work some kinks out of my technique. Blaming grains is a little like blaming your golf clubs for a bad round lol
