I know it's coir and all but I'm pretty sure high nitrogen could be a vector for mold. It's the same reason straw can be used as bulk sub but Timothy hay will contam.
Don't quote me on this I'm just guessing. I think if you're given the option you should just take the regular coir. It seems to do just fine without Calcium nitrate which I think bodhisatta may have been getting at with his post

I've used this, but in blocks, in the past with great results. Not sure if it helps... Advanced mix 4

Your grows are amazing man and IIRC you use a rather complex bulk sub with some additives, including chicken poo, right? I was wondering if you have tried a grow only using plain cvg and if you did, were the results disappointing compared to the other sub?
I'm curious about this, it would be very interesting to run an experiment using a clone, one grow with cvg and the other grow with additives, and see if there's really a difference in performance.

Yes, my bulk grow recipes has been quite overly complicated IMO. The plan was to compare results with different amounts of everything I had, but that had to wait due to unexpected events along the way. I've finally got the growing environment and conditions pretty stable right now to move on with those tests I've been planning to do.
I'll start running some tests starting with much simpler tweaks like this question I have for starters and post back with my findings.
I can't stick with what everyone does if there's more to find out, though I will use some teks as a foundation to experiment with.

Good attitude Trying new things is a great idea. I do the same. Especially with sclerotia producing species. I always have some standard cvg tubs to get some fruits but trying new substrate compositions etc. is interesting.

The grains are prolly a little wet against the glass and the myc is just taking longer to colonize. Doesn't look bacterial, yet anyways

When I first joined pasty had a clone grow log where he tested three clones. Each clone was grown in two tubs. One with coir and one with poo. If I remember correctly 2 of the 3 clones did better in coir and the one that did better in poo wasn't by much

This is a typical sign of bacteria. It might not be that bad but there is something wrong IMO. If the grain was loaded too wet, the jar usually gets problems with colonization on the bottom. That's why people used vermiculite on the bottom of grain jars a few years ago If it colonizes completely you could use it as spawn. I spawned a lot of slightly bacterial grain and got good yield. One picture is not enough to judge. You could show us the progress and post a new pic in two days.

Besides, coir is so convenient and easy to prep, and cubes aren't precisely a picky or delicate species, they'll grow like weed.
Mush cult is such a lot of work already without having to properly pasteurize subs with additives.
Perhaps, with exotic species that extra effort makes a difference, but even then, lots of people have grown species like pans on plain cvg with good results.

That jar is a hanoi cube. I admit my first LI pour was too heavy. However they recolonized within 24hrs when shook. They're from the 27th of febuary.

OK now we got some more details. If you poured LI then I agree with PPP and kenetic that it's probably just wet because of the excess liquid caused by pouring.

All of you guys rock. Thanks guys. I was hoping that was my best case scenario.. you'd think someone who bartended for 8 years could pour a proper amount of liquid..

Just takes practice. I've practiced excessively since I started. I go through about 30 plates a week. Sometimes more!
