I’m not sure if they are good or not… I just wanted to share a story of when I split an 8th with my friend in Tucson. The trip was fine but for about 5 days after we had a horrible respiratory infection( both of us!) we had this shit that looked like sea foam filling up our lungs! It was awful! There was a couple times when I was sleeping that shit filled my lungs almost completely and I couldn’t breathe until I like vomited out of my lungs!
It got worse and worse til we took penicillin!
The mushrooms we ate looked fine though, some Mexican gold caps.
I’m not saying this to scare you, just sharing what happened with me. That said though, I would probably wait till you get a better flush.

How were we supposed to know there was something funky going on with those commercial mushrooms?
I’m sure pounds of those mushrooms we’re eaten and lots of people probably have had a similar experience…
Well if your lungs fill with sea foam shit… take some penicillin.

Speaking of plate pins, I took a plate pin and put it straight to GLC 10/27. Due to my bacteria problems I haven't seen how it performs, however that GLC jar pinned like crazy. Now for plate pin^2.

Hi guys. I'm a newbie looking to do their first grow. I've taken time to read through many guides. My plan is to grow in a couple of 56quart tubs, using 6 quart of spawn in each, 12 quart spawn in total.
I have a couple of questions id love some clarity on...
1. I plan on using the PDA recipe. Every recipe ends up producing 1L of pda liquid. I assume I would only need 1 or 2 petri dishes in order to spawn my 12 quart jars. Does the rest of the PDA liquid go to waste or can I fill up another say 20 petri dishes, seal them up and put them in the fridge? If so, how long do they last?
2. Instead of buying an Autoclave, will a pressure cooker will do just fine to treat the PDA mixture the same as an autoclave? Using a quart jar to put the PDA in to do this will be just fine, right?
Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum! You can scale the PDA recipes as needed, I usually do 500ml at a time which pours about 20. If I only wanted to pour 10 I would make 250ml at the same ingredient ratios. I pour 40 sleeves at a time, use the ones I need and wrap the rest to save for later. I just recently used agar plates that were 9 months old, individually wrapped and stored in my closet. They worked perfectly. Also, I usually plan to use about 5 plates per culture that I put to grains. 2 for germination, 1 for T2, then put my two best sections of growth to their own plates and use those to inoculate grains.
A pressure cooker is what the large majority of us use around here. 20 minutes at 15 psi is good enough for agar solution.

Might want to consider shoeboxes first but that's totally just my opinion
To answer your questions 1. Just reduce the ratio, I often make 200ml of agar cause I dont need a ton of plates, pda isnt really that picky anyways.
2. Pressure cooker will do just fine, just make sure it can get to 15 psi. I used mason jars to pour agar for a while before I got media bottles, they will work, media bottles just make pouring a little easier
Edit. Damn bigfoot beat me to it lol

I’d rather have 5 shoeboxes go bad and get 1 clean one than have a full mono go bad.
Even if everything is clean, you’re still going to pull a lot of mushrooms off those 6 boxes. If even 1 jar is bad in your mono, you would have potentially fucked your whole grow.
Also, do not under estimate the need for plates. You will want more than 2.

Doctor Mario said: I've had plates throw pins in a couple of months and I've got plates that are 6 months old and don't have knots. I'm sure it's all culture dependent.
I've learned that if I lower the nutrient content of my agar it generally promotes pinning after full colonization. When there's lots of nutrients, or even the regular amount, in recipes the culture can sometimes just stay dormant because it's happy just eating and eating and eating and has no need to pin

1. By "agar plates", you mean petri dishes? If so, how do you wrap them? Just tape around the sides?
2. Can you explain the meanings of germination a d t2? What do you use those for?
Perfect, everything else sounds straightforward

You don't just inoculate a dish and throw it on grain. Agar is for culture cleaning.
Your spores germinated in the first plate. The best looking sections are then transfered on to another plate. Those are grown out and then the best looking sections are transfered to another plate. This is repeated until the culture is clean and growing consistently. Then it is ready for grain. This can take 2 or 20 transfers depending on the quality of the spores.
Many plates are used in this process so none are wasted.
