I have some plates that are fully grown and have been sitting since July, are they viable if I were to make a transfer now 4 months later? I'm gonna try and see what happens regardless.

That's what I'm thinking but what about loss of vigor? I seen a post from bod during a search saying he wouldn't transfer from a plate that fruited, some of them haven't.
I have a hole in my understanding/ignorance about senescence, anyone have any good links to educate me? At what point must you return to spore or is it just not necessary and you can go forever with mycelium if it keeps colonizing?

I think things like depletion of nutrients or a plate getting to fruiting does take away some vigor indefinitely from a culture, but cultures really need to be neglected for that to happen. Who knows maybe you could get it back by growing it out enough. Or if your culture has gotten genetically damaged from any sorts of factors.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24625937/fpart/all
And to go along with that, I've seen alot of plate pins and everyone trying to clone a plate pin. Imo a plate pin is showing genetics that perform under less than ideal conditions, so why would you clone those genetics? Everyone says oh fruiting strains this fruiting strains that, show me a strain that won't fruit ha.

They pin because the entire plate is colonized. Pinning conditions achieved Hows that less than ideal?
Agar pins are super handy for many reasons
Sterility being a big reason. and from experience agar pins usually perform pretty well.
I've only had a handful of dud clones and afaik none were agar pins.

Transfering a pin off a ms plate is very low effort and easy way to get really nice clean mycelium. Very useful indeed

High CO2, higher humidity than you would have in a tub probably by a bit, very low nutes that are usually not the end fruiting subrate material, no clustering or size info. I don't think there's any reason a culture can't just be cleaned on petris..
Never cloned a fruit that didn't perform well all the way through, don't see the point. But to each their own.

Some of my best cultures have originated from plate pins so I’m not apposed to them. The Apollo pheno of rw x mm was a plate pin that looked kinda interesting so I cloned it, ran a tub and fell in love

How long does it take for plate pins to show up for you guys? I held onto like 150 plates last season for about 5 months and never got one pin
Anyway, I'm seeing mycelium jumping off really well in all my jars 24 hours after noccin' them up so I'm really excited. Even though the wedge got stuck in the shoulder of one of the jars and the mycelium side got stuck to the jar in a couple others. That really is annoying as hell lol

If clean, about 2-3 months for me. My temps are on the low end and my plates are 90-100mm and poured kind of thick.
When I was using no pours, I could get pins on plates faster since the smaller size would colonize quicker and were thinner.
I find that the plates will knot and then take a long time to pin. Knots on subs usually turn into pins within a week. On a plate, it can take quite a while longer.
This is all for MS.

I've had plates throw pins in a couple of months and I've got plates that are 6 months old and don't have knots. I'm sure it's all culture dependent.

Not all plates do, I’m just super slow on clearing out old plates.. much to my irritation when I finally get around to it and then find some neat surprises. Been getting a lot that are smashed against the lid girth wise.

Do small plate pins grow full size with same morphology when taken to normal subs?
Or do micro dick, stay micro dick?
I'm assuming people are talking cubes when they ascertain the goodness of the plate pin,
But plate pins are also definitely super important in exotic work where you have no idea of the genetics and are looking for more tolerant genetics or outlier genetics, simply because it suggests tolerance of simple subs

I got some shrooms from my bulk and they look a bit bad, are they good to eat or should i toss them. I think my tub suffered from some bacteria and that might be the case.

You'll probably be fine as long as long as you use heated dehydrator over 140f. Maybe some stomach discomfort or diarrhea if it's really gross.
edit: i cant expand your pic but from the thumb it looks fine

I forgot about this aspect too. It’s really helpful for sclerotia species to try and increase your chances of a good fruit/stone producer based on what type you pull from the plate.
I don’t know if it necessarily saves you any time since you can get stones and fruit fairly quickly after spawning, but it could cut down on your resources used if your materials are stretched pretty thin.
