Odd, something else is up because packing your vessel shouldn't result in popped bags.

Why use a PC then?

And how long do you steam grains?????

I wasn't being combative, I don't think a probe is necessary in a steamer because I let it run for an extra 6+ hours and temp check the vessel at the top and bottom, and you got on my ass.

Fuck yeah we can incorporate some rocket science!

Can't make a citizens supply of rocket fuel without a few steamers dialed in...

That's what I thought having run the AA75X enough to see the bags suck shut. I'll try using the one bottom basket, not both stacked, and also without inner lid atop the bags.

u literally said just before that you don't see a point in using a probe tho

must have missed the grain steam question but look, I answered it for you.

you may not be trying to be combative but you might want to consider that that is how your posts come off to many of us on here

Any 7th grade English teacher could point out the countless combative statements in dudes comments. He is probably hoping someone will start picking apart his comments. This just perpetuates the feeding frenzy.

It's like a social disease.

Anyone ever use malted barley for spawn?

From experience making beer malted barley would make incredibly sticky spawn. I've used spent brewing grains in bottle subs. It was sticky and gross. If you can get unmalted barley it would work well.

Whole barley is like baby oats. If you want it malty then just let the grain sit hydrated an extra 12hr in a bucket. I notice my grains sprout occasionally and it's all good as long as the whole lot isn't too far gone. Don't fuck with rolled grains though.

12 hours once core temp 112F is reached.  works with rye, wheat, oats ect...

So I think the 112f is a typo seeing your more recent answers. Ngl I took notes on it and everything but thought wow 12 hours at below normal pasteurization temps is kinda cray. Happy I asked again and got the actual answer from you.

So 209-212f for 12 hours at core temp of the most central bag in the barrel. Where is this info actually from? Would I find it in one of my Stamets books? And if that is doable, technically we could steam grain jars in pots on the stove without a pc. Its just going to take a long ass time and water top ups probably. I'm not saying I condone this and I've had pcs for over a decade but still its possible I guess:shrug:

What sort of probes are you guys using? Like a long cabled meat probe or something? Links or examples please?

Also how cool would it be to have a relay / smart plug or something to auto turn it off according to a 12 hour timer once those parameters are hit. That would account for any fluctuations in density, external temp, grain  sub temp etc. And only use just enough electricity so would keep costs down and potentially spad thing sup I you were trying to load that steamer as many times a week as you could. Can any engineery dudes recommend how I could incorporate that into a PID? Bonus points for 3 phase. And it would be cool to get s notification or something once the temp has dropped to the temp you want before you remove and handle.

What do you guys do with the probe bag? Does it vac seal its self like the others and you can just use it or does it go to waste / end up in the next load as the test bag?

If I ever expanded and added more barrels on to my original steamer barrel would I need to attach a hose to to upper part of the first barrel and attach that to the lower part of the next barrel and rinse and repeat that for each barrel in a series? If I did that would i only want to take the temp of the central bag in the last barrel?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post in here with all the questions. Thats enough of my insomniac ramblings. I know you guys were having fun with the flames.

ya. 212 is what I meant to type.

RR claims he does 8 hrs after core temp is reached and gets away with it

How many 55gal drums could one 55gal drum steam at once? Would 1 into 4 individuals be better than one into 2 series of 2?

I'm actually curious af about that too. I'm planning on building a steamer soon. For supplemented blocks mainly.

Using a stationary water barrel connected to elevated spawn barrels that are on a tilting rolling mount seems like it could make lite work of the heavier lifting tasks.

How much of a volume of water is nessicary to make a steamer work well. Logic dictates  the smaller the volume of water the more efficient it would be to hear the water, but also the more it would need to heat incoming water. I wonder if on of the 120 elements would be enough to make a heater.

Anyone have a link to the basic math of how a steamer system works?

that would be interesting to know.  I dont have a steamer for mine just a float valve in a drum.  for a boiler running multiple drums I think propane would be most efficient. I don't think the 120V would handle the task very well.  I bought a 220 element and installed an outlet for it but I havent used it yet to be able to attest for how well it works

Hey guys, besides the flowhoods, do we know relatively safe approach for inoculating sterile bags for oysters with grain spawn?

Bags are too big for the SAB

You just run your steamer on gas? What kind of burner? How much gas per run? Is it plumbed to your house line or just propane in a tank.

I used to brew so I understand how to calculate gpm of boil off I'd just need the figures for how many gpm of steam would be needed to adequately heat a 55gal drum to 212 and maintain heat. I'd bet you could make a pretty small boiler that refills on a float valve. Much smaller than one would think you'll be needed. The industrial boiler for a shrinkwrap machine is about half the size of a 55 gallon drum and most of it is the outer insulation jacket. The burner is no bigger than a natural gas hot water heaters burner.

I have seen what they are calling the ez bake barrel. It's the $10 240v heating element used in hot hot water heaters wired to a simple 120 wall outlet which theoretically gives it something like 1600 watts of power spread across a larger element. The water level is kept pretty low and the bags sit on a false bottom just above it. The max temp I'm reading achieved is just under 200. I'm sure it would work for blocks not so much for grain.

I'm going to renovate an existing barn. I wanna go all electric and at least semiautomatic. One wall will be a bank of autoclaves for grain and the other side will be steamers for blocks. By insulating steamer barrels I expect the electric cost to be minimized.

Homie the electrician figured 1<4 would be better than 1<2×2, but perhaps I should consult an engineer on that?

I don't wanna mess with gas. Maybe a small fission reactor from ol Bill will be available in the coming years:rofl: Realistically solar and wind would be very practical. Metal roof for mounting panels and a wonderful natural wind tunnel makes this location rather green-friendly.
