Question: If one was to gun for only one, big flush in a cube mono, could one choose to have a thinner substrate than the usual 3-3.5"

I wouldn't short the organism anything it needs.

well, I'm sorta all about shorting it right now. I'm currently taking the spawn I was using in one tub, and splitting into two monos, yielding 80% in each tub what I was getting in one full spawn mono. My current genetics are leaning my grows to push out one big first flush, so I'm thinking I could try a bit thinner of a sub, with the same amount of spawn. Seems to be plenty of weight left after the first flush.
I guess I'm wondering if this could potentially lead to a faster grow.

Give it go. This is a 40 mm substrate. It's a clone though.

Base Icks said: We're you tracking the core temp of the top bags at all?
No I don't see the point. Ill check the top and bottom temps of my steamer. And actually I was running mine for 36 at one point too. But to tell you the truth there were potentially other variables that played into the bags that went bacterial, being bacterial. Ide say try it out, but don't count on it. Especially if your already running your steaming and prepping grain, just try it. The more you could compare it to actually pressure cooked grain would be worth it. I would never use steamed spawn for g2g tho as an example. People steam their blocks no problem, but there is suppose to be a higher endospore rate in grain, but idk how true that is, cause my soy pellets are pretty hot I know that. My boiler steamer set up is kinda unique, but it's insulated hardcore so as long as the boilers at 212 and the last vessel on the line is 212 I know the bags will be for sure after 12 hours ha, so ide do it for another 24 after that. I have a couple temp probes I could use but I never found the point.
If you really want to know just steam one and leave it to proof like your verifying a petri.
how do you not see the point in checking the core temp? its extremely important to know this. one huge variable apparently overlooked by you is that the core temp of your bags may have never reached 209-212F. thats the acceptable range as far as Im concerned

Because some people run their steamers for 20, 16 or even 12 hours. I run my sawdust for like 30 on average but I'm going down to 24 to save money, and I've also spaced them so they get more steam around them. Like I said I was even running 36 for grains. And I'm monitoring the temperature of the vessels, I could very easily put a probe into a bag and monitor it with a thermometer I already have but I've never had a problem, but I do run it longer than I need to probably.
Not saying that someone shouldn't, but I had been pasteurizing subs for a while, steaming subs for a while, and at one point I may have monitored a bag. But if your insulation, spacing, and steamer are appropriate I don't see the point if you know about how long it takes your bags to get to core temp. I say 4 hours usually. And if your having problems then it's probably spacing, insulation or a malfunction related to the steamer itself, but most importantly the first two. And if you can ensure your vessel is 212.
And your lower bags will probably hit temp slower than the top bags, so that's something you'll want to consider as well.

you say that youve never had a problem tho but were just talking about your bags being bacterial?
it takes my steamer over 12 hours to reach a core temp of 212F since you haven measured it I dont know how you know 4 hrs will suffice? if you want to save power you should measure it and then youll know what kind of time you should run for. no point in spending money to insufficiently sterilize sawdust or grain.
I don't have problems with atmospheric sterilization and have considered these things from the beginning

You're probably the most dangerous noob on this board. You have no idea what you're talking about 95% of the time and you're loud af.
You're the guy that admits to not being able to successfully sterilize anything with your steamer, your uninoculated grains smell like apples and your production blocks produce fucked up looking jenky fruits from equally fucked up blocks and shamelessly sell that trash to the public.
You should be wearing a dunce cap, bro.

see? u dont even know. its the middle that takes the longest to reach temp not the bottom and top. u want a probe on the very center bag in the steamer. and its not spacing. I fit 49 bags in my 55gal steamer. there is no spacing except for how many bags I can cram in there

Lol I'm talking about grains.

I'm sterilizing 600+ pounds of sub with 5500 watts, I think at a certain point it matters when your trying to utilize a certain amount of BTUs per sqft.
I do hundreds of bags a month and lose zero.
Like I said, I would use one if I knew I wasn't overkilling it. And yes to save power, and I probably should my electric bill is through the roof.
And the amount of mushrooms I have P9. How's your little closet gourmet grow looking?

but you were literally just talking about having bacterial bags. and at the rest of that, lets get oldschool with it... Pics or it didn't happen! because for you to be schilling out the "advice" u do while ignoring all the good advice u get I have yet to see a pic of anything that looks awesome let alone decent

Your going to get bacterial grain bags steaming them no matter what!
And I'm sorry unlike p9 I am at risk of incriminating myself by showing off my public business.
But I can assure you I've grown way more gourmets than P9, who doesn't even have a steamer, and loves to talk shit to me.

last time QM33 got up p9's nose, it was p9 took a time out for his sanity. p9 is knowledgable, experienced, scientific and methodical.
So if it's gonna go on, think first. QM33, with all that growing and expertise your ego is so fragile you can't just let shit go and know what you know?
it's more important to be a good member of the community than to swing a big shroomdick.
and p9, i don't want you to get all fashtutzed...you are too valuable to so many of us. focus on the love. you get plenty.
shroomery has saved my sanity since i got here. this is a magical place.
btw, i have learned very valuable lessons from p9. i love what bod has done, but he ain't been available for interactive. which is cool, he did tons, but some of n00bs need the input.
