I was gonna say one might be light and one might be golden light or something darker. I agree with mad season. Mixing up your own agar is the shit. I can get a pound of malt extract from the brewing shop for 5 bucks and several ounces of nice agar powder from the health food store for 6. I also like making dog food agar, and I'm thinking about trying it with sweet potato broth.

Hey, I'm a noobie and thought I'd ask my question here. I have 2 BRF cakes (dunked and rolled in verm) sitting in a small SGFC. I've been misting+fanning 3x daily for two weeks with no pinning. The mycelium now has patches of faint blue and dark yellow. Are the cakes contaminated?

Hey thanks for your input! Makes sense I suppose.
When I first started working with agar, I was going to mix it up myself as I usually prefer to go the more frugal route, but wanted to get premade stuff at first just to get the feel. Then figured I'd keep doing it for convenience, as MEA is pretty cheap from Stamet's place anyway. But fuck it, I'm going to be going through a lot of plates so I'll just start doing it myself and fuck around with some recipes and the like.
Is the NOW brand of agar agar a good option? I've seen that stuff around for pretty cheap.

It's great. That's what I use and I've never been let down by it.

I'm too paranoid to upload a pic right now, but they do look dry just before mistings. I think part of it is because some of the verm from the dunk&roll has fallen off, leaving areas of bare mycelium.
I'll add another inch of perlite as well as dunking&rolling again. I want to mist more, but I'm afraid of overdoing it. How can one tell whether they have misted enough?

Wouldn't want the law to see your mushroomless PF cake on a site full of metric tons of mushrooms.

There's 100 different things that could be wrong, and nobody's really interested in trying to fix it based on the description provided by someone who doesn't know what they're looking at.
You don't dunk and roll a second time... If it's already been this long your window for rolling in verm is gone. At this point it'll just make the contaminants that have landed on the cake flourish. You mist until they glisten, and mist again after they've stopped glistening.
Don't be one of those people who is so paranoid they finally succeed in their grow, get some mushrooms, eat them, then freak the fuck out and flush all their illegal shit because "the cops are coming".

all right all right, here are three pics. excuse me for not immediately uploading pics. this is just before misting. the tub is usually elevated, but I moved it to get better lighting. there are 3 inches of perlite in there, but I thought it was enough because my hygrometer recorded a RH of ~95%.

Normally you want as many cakes you can fit without them being crowded and at least 5 inches I believe on perlite and mist the cakes till they glisten

-One cake per SGFC is no good, -That may be contaminated -It's definitely dry
-If you're paranoid, don't upload to imgur. Upload here, where the site strips your exif data automatically and uses SSL. Apparently imgur does now too, but hotlinking is still a good way to draw negative attention on your image. -The chamber needs to be higher than that. -Don't upload in a public library yo
The different colors all over the surface are not a good sign at all.. I can't see it well enough to say for sure. Go ahead and dunk again and hope it changes colors back. Or, take a brighter picture and maybe we can save you the time.
Also, stop fanning that.

 WTF, A public library?
Also, not to be too pedantic, but Imgur strips EXIF metadata and uses SSL as well. Still, it's definitely better to use the built in uploader and image manager here.

Do they? That's good. I didn't think that was always the case. Still, hotlinking isn't cool.
