As if I wanted somebody's unproven and undocumented strain enough to pay for it?
This was my first thought. I assume it’s for people that have trouble getting a clean culture. But if you can’t get a clean culture on your own you certainly can’t keep one, so you got to do what? Buy a syringe every time you prep some grain? Seems like a lot of effort to avoid doing the work. Now if it was a banger culture that throws off canopies of curiously strong and fast growing cubes sure, then I may throw a 20 at it but how you going to prove that? And even if you did once one of us got it we would just give it away so...

If I haven't used mine in 4 or 5 days, I wipe the grate down with an iso soaked paper towel and let it run for about 5 minutes before I start working but mine is in my bedroom where the dog sheds everywhere. If it's in a clean room, I wouldn't worry about it.

Be careful you can easily ruin a filter by rubbing it. I wouldn't wipe the face of a filter. Probably just leave more paper towel particles than were there in the first place which will be magnets.
If it's a true clean bench with a removable grate then you can take it out and proper hose it down when you want.

I’ve always been running my FH for an hour before use.
Think it was possibly a post from mushboy I read recently that said he gets straight to work, then with Dr Mario’s 5 min comment its got me thinking.
Anyone else got input?
Also, when I first got my hood I’d wipe the grate down but I stopped doing it, no need.

If anyone is interested in how to professionally do it from the Labconco Horizontal Clean Bench manual
Quote:
The HEPA filter media is very fragile. Do not touch or contact the media surface. If you think the surface of a HEPA filter is damaged, DO NOT USE THE BENCH. Have the HEPA filter integrity tested by a qualified certifier before using the cabinet.
Quote:
Start-Up Turn on fluorescent light and clean bench blower. Check the prefilter for obstructions and note the gauge reading. Wipe down the interior surfaces of the clean bench with stainless steel cleaner or 70% ethanol. DO NOT use abrasive cleaners, bleach or solvents, as they may damage the work surface of the clean bench. Allow the clean bench to operate undisturbed for 5 to 15 minutes before loading materials. Wear long sleeved lab coat with knit cuffs and over-the-cuff rubber gloves. Use protective eyewear.
dont let me catch you without a labcoat and eyewear

I run mine 24/7 and I need to buy a steel table for it. It shimmies the table and yesterday stabbed itself with my scalpel that was on my rack infront of the face.
I might get a new filter sooner than later or something but it works as well as I use it aside from the random bug entering my space. Squash beetles, ladybugs, a fucking spider crawled into a bag I was innoculating and it went BAAAD
Labcoat and Eyewear? I rock gloves and a respirator. Lye and naptha don't scare me!

I think that it used to be common practice to let a hood run for an hour before working in an attempt to "scrub" the air in the room. That's not nessecary and likely impossible. If you've got laminar flow, you should be good to go. I just let mine run for 5 mins because of the dust and whatever else that might be on the face of my filter.

I just let it run as long as it takes me to iso thangs and get rolling. I've done tests opening plates with the hood only having been run for a minute or two with success.

Yeah the most I do is turn it on low while I get my stuff ready then crank it up.
I’ve suddenly been having some satellite bacteria problems. It’s probably me somehow but I’m not doing anything different really so I’ve been wondering if maybe a piece of grain or agar got bounced into the filter and now it’s shooting bacteria out when the hood is on
