Southerner said: Had an issue running some jars last night in a 25x and was hoping someone could help me pinpoint the issue. Was running 9 quart jars (no idea how these magicians get the 10th in, maybe because I’m using plastic lids) and about 45 min after reaching pressure I heard a loud pop and saw steam escaping from all around the lid. Immediately cut of the 25x and assumed I had a jar explode. This morning after opening it up to clean there are no broken jars and nothing I can see that would have caused this. Possible I didn’t get the lid tightened all the way and the pressure popped it up? Maybe the excess pressure valve not working right? I’m fuckin’ confused. Thanks for any help!
It is completely impossible for the lid to physically move upwards and allow steam to begin releasing "all around the lid"
I think you were not paying attention and the toggle valve popped. I think they pop at around 26 psi. The newer AA model sterilizers have a deflector on the toggle valve (a bell shape) that deflects the steam downward and might look like it's coming out all over the lid. But only you'd know if the valve was up afterwards or not.

Sure looked like it was all around the lid to me. Toggle valve was still down this morning when I went to clean up what I thought was a popped jar. Suffice it to say I’ve ordered the newer toggle, a new relief and new plug. Was purchased used and although no problems in the last ten or so runs might as well play it safe.
Not saying the lid was pushed all the way off but seemed to have been pushed enough to break the all around seal and release steam/pressure. Fuck it, will see what happens with new parts.

Honestly I'm not sure the toggle valve flips up when the safety is activated or not.
I have had the lid move with a little pop before from putting it on crooked, it just had a leak around one handle not around the whole thing. It would have to move quite a bit to leak all the way around.

The toggle valve does, indeed, flip up when the safety is activated. Or it least did the one time that happened to me.

Well to complicate it there is the old style valve and the new style valve and not sure if they are different. The newer one is larger and deflects it downward for sure differences.
Did you happen to see the pressure at the time southerner?
I do a little finger trick to get the lid on evenly not sure if you are doing that. You always have to carefully seat it evenly. Just put fingertips in the groove on opposite sides to feel and adjust as necessary.
If it wasn't the safety I' sure it was just a crooked lid.
There's really no way for the sealing surfaces to become suddenly destroyed during use.

I started doing the finger thing recently actually as I had a session that was letting a small amount of moisture out and sizzling but it held pressure the entire time. I definitely have the old style toggle and it was sounding like it was trying to release pressure a bit before the pop.
Although the knob setting has slowly been drifting down on me I was currently at a little over 5 with the pressure cutting off at around 22psi and kicking back on at about 16psi which seemed like a perfect range. It’s very possible it was just coming out of one side and appeared to be all around. Just giving the best description I could with the short time I witnessed it.
This is also the first time I tried tightening the wing nuts only snug as recommended by a TC in a different thread. Not sure if that makes a difference but some extra info. Probably just faulty parts from sitting in someone’s garage for years. These things are beasts so I’ll monitor closely after changing them out but I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Do hand-tight, as in as tight as you can by hand. As long as you are not using tools you will not overtighten it.
If you had run it crooked for a while they get a little uneven spot that takes a while of regular use to work itself out.
You probably need to lightly lubricate the sealing surface and threads of knobs with vaseline as outlined on page 6 of the manual.
22 psi is pretty high though.
Also you need to tighten 2 opposite side wing-nuts evenly at the same time, dont tighten it one at a time, not sure if you know that.

I’ve been lightly lubricating the contact area and tightening the nuts down two at a time. First thing I did was print out the manual for it. Guess I overlooked the wing nut lubrication but they’ve been turning fine. Might not have been 22psi but right there at the end of the red/green zone. Quite a bit of fluctuation but up until last night didn’t have any problems. I’ll replace the parts once they come in, lubricate the wing nut threads lightly and try to get the lid on perfectly for my next run of jars. I’m thinking one or all of the parts that relieve pressure weren’t working properly but I’ll find out in a couple days. Thanks for the tips sandman.

I have a 75x and had the same issues until I upped the psi into the green zone on the dial. Which is around 17-18 psi.
I also had some bad bags from unicorn. XLS-a bags where there was a hole right by the filter. A melted hole and in the exact same spot on 4 bags.

No, he was replying to a question asked about his product many posts ago. I thought it was spam at first (sorry), but he used the correct "Reply" button so I could read the post he's responding to.

Well I’m not workman or an ID guy but, based on that cap appearance I’m gonna suggest it’s not a cube. I can’t quite see in the pic but the stipe almost looks scaled.
