Omg total douchenoobcake mistake
Edit: and then comes the simmer post
heat releases the starch, long soak will penetrate the grains of wbs?? if i use heat it will need to be short?
I haven't done WBS before this run, so I can't say with certainty, but they are definitely a lot less clumpy than the millet straight to PC. It was more work though, obviously.

Just soak it, let it dry a little and then pc for 90 mins.
All kinds of oil and foamy junk collects on the surface and gets dumped out so the seeds are pretty clean.
You can do no prep too where you just put water and seeds in a jar and pc it. Takes a little experimenting to figure out the ratios but it works well once you figure it out.

personally I never found milo or millet to absorb enough water from a cold water soak. I would get dry grains that stalled out.

I'm currently trying to figure out the best way myself.

I'm still not sure if I got it right or not, but I know when I did straight millet to the PC directly they all stalled. I think they may have been too wet.
Anyone have any opinions on this WBS run through?
I soak for around 16-18 hours, throw on stove, bring it begins to boil, strain and lay out and it'll steam dry pretty quickly, load and PC. So many ways, find what works best for you

Thanks, Crack. That's pretty much what I did except for laying them out. Do you think this picture looks good enough to go, or do they appear too wet? If so, is there anything I can do about it or so I need to scrap them and begin again?

They look good to me, I've loaded wetter. I have found that cheap seed gives me clumping issues. I only will use penninngton now. (That's probably spelled wrong) I do see some burst grain but it doesn't look like enough for issues, IMO.

Cool, appreciate it. They're actually pretty non-clumpy which is a nice surprise. This is "Supreme Buffet" from PetSmart.
One more quick question for you guys. How necessary are modded lids for GE for inoculating WBS with LC? Is it okay if I just flip the lids or crack them open slightly, or should I really use a drilled lid? I've got both, I just forgot about it before PC'ing this bunch and am hoping I can just use umodded lids.

You can use unmodded just give it a little backing off. Don't forget when you go to shake. 1 piece lids?

Routine: rinse twice, cold soak for 36hrs, dry in strainer for 12hrs, load up pc.
Will not use anything else grain wise for a long time. No sludge, shakes well, colonizes quickly

These ones are two piece. I usually flip the lids when I PC them so I don't have to wrestle them so much when I open them. I thought maybe being flipped that was enough. If it's not, then maybe that's what caused my first run of millets to stall. I'll definitely give them a little loosening with these.
Thank you very much. I'm so excited. I've got my first round of LC clones going into these, and my APE plate I spent like 2 months cleaning up on agar, so I'm feeling pretty good, but double checking everything.

Yeah, will do. I'm working on getting a grindstone drill bit and replacement lids (perhaps plastic?) because the ones I made are scary jagged sharp and get me every time.
Unfortunately using just the drill bit hasn't worked out very well for me, but I definitely want to invest in the time to get them set up properly, especially with the LC.
ACE Hardware has quickly become my favorite shopping experience lately.

The hole punches for metal are great but pricey. Uni-bits work well. Stop right before your hole size on one side and flip over and finish from the other side and it cleans itself up. I love my 1 piece plastic lids though. I use both though.

You can use the same stuff as normal with lc. Just instead of dropping a wedge you’ll be squirting/pouring a little lc.
I’m a fan of Walmart’s ultra generic bags that just say “bird seed” real big on the front.

Longer soak times benefit millet ime. The ones where I went under 10hrs are very slow to colonize unless I used LI for the extra moisture.

you can get clean holes with a normal drill bit if you have some wood against the backside as you drill through it.

Great idea, I have a million little nics on my finger tips from modifying 24 lids the other day… 1/4” hole in the middle for a SHIP and two 1/8” for GE
Does LC need GE holes?

I didn't even crack my unmodified lids and mine seem fine. So, no, I don't think so.
