Anyone own a bacticinerator / IR steriliser from eBay? Cheaper, delivery from China. Thinking about ordering one.

I really want one too… took me a long time to overcome worrying about my hand catching fire after dousing with alcohol and using a torch, but I still want one.
I also have a question… does anyone stay away from noccing up poured plates with a spore syringe? I was losing the better half of my plates when I did so and thought for a long time it was my sterile technique… I realize now that even if you only drop a couple drops, if the excess liquid rolls to the sides when wrapping with parafilm, it attracts contaminants. So now I only use no-pour for spore syringe inoculations. Most of my transfers stay clean and I imagine even though I still have not tried a swab to agar before, that would probably be fine too.

I use the tip of the dispensing needle to make a small hole in the agar and drop a single drop in it.

usually 1 small drop is sufficient

Pressure cook a jar of q tips / cotton swabs then you can wipe the excess moisture as well as spreading the spores in a zig zag. But usually 1 small drop is ok if you shake the syringe before use.

Can someone tell me what’s going on with these bags? Is the millet in the bottom of the bag too wet? I broke them up and shook them a couple times. It looked like it helped the first time but the next time the colonized grains that went to the bottom didn’t spread at all. At this point there must be bacteria because it’s been a while and I opened the bags for g2g.

so, i won one of the shroomery hackathon giveaway prizes or whatever & it just got to me in the mail... it was two of the smallest bags of presterilized rye grain (legit they are a half pint each lol) & this huge bag of compost. what am i supposed to do with this? lol. not complaining since i got it for free but like, are you supposed to just drop agar wedges into the compost? or is it more for gourmets? i’d like to use it instead of just throwing it out if i can but it’s giant & if it’s useless it’s about to go in the trash

What are some of the other classic symptoms? I’m new to this and still learning. I just know from the PF tek guides that sectoring and different colors are signs. Obviously there is sectoring with the mycelium making the abrupt stop at that point but I don’t see any color on these. I was just assuming it’s bacterial because it’s been so long. And I don’t see any mold. I’m just wondering why they never wanted to colonize the bottoms from the beginning. I don’t think I’m they had that much bacteria the first week and in each one. After the first shake a few days in it seemed to help. And then another week went by and they were mostly colonized but just going slow so I gave them another shake. And then it seemed to go backwards. I guess the bacteria got a chance to proliferate.
I was planning on picking out the colonized chunks from each one and throwing them in a monotub. I know not to mix it with any good spawn because the tub has a decent chance of going bad. What would be better just spraying it with some diluted h2o2 or should I soak in water that has a little bit of h2o2 over night like you can do with cakes?

bacteria doesn't really change colors like molds do, so it can be a lot less obvious. the things that really tip me off to it are the excessive thick & creamy mycelium, the way a lot of the grains are exposed on the bag, the inconsistency of the myc, the excessive condensation, & the fact that it formed a hard line & stopped colonizing the rest of the bag. bacteria & other nasties always rear their heads after a shake or two. that's why people always recommend to shake your spawn if you're unsure if it's contaminated or not. i'm assuming the bottom of the bag is quite a bit more wet than the top, which probably gave the bacteria ample time to take over the bottom of the bag & prevented the myc from colonizing the rest
yeah, definitely don't mix it with anything clean. you'll get a one way ticket to trich city lol. honestly, in this situation i'd recommend just throwing a layer of coir over it & top fruiting the bags. if you break up the myc it'll probably be even weaker & you might not even get a flush, just considering how bad those bags look. sometimes you can get away with spawning bacterial shit but i'd only recommend doing that if it fully colonized after a shake or two.
here's a good resource for spotting bacterial spawn. it was really enlightening for me when i was learning what to look for

You have a lot in there for tying them this way. You can not easily redistribute the mycelium when you shake unless you pay attention to it. Maybe the bottom grain was a bit bacterial before the inoculant got to it and now nothing will grow on it.

Yeah those are huge amounts of grain, you’d have to sterilize for a long time to be safe.
You can tell there’s bacteria from the thick splotchy mycelium and how there’s a clear line where it suddenly stopped colonizing.
Also the grain will be dark and wet a lot of times.

That is a pretty big bag of sub but you could knock the bags up and mix them into half of it or something. Pretty much anything will like compost.

thanks AKA! i hadn't seen much on using compost as sub & was a little confused when i got it. should i use the SAB to spawn to the compost? or does it work like spawning to coir? i'm just a little confused as the compost bag has those filter patches but is completely sealed, so i'd have to rip it open to put anything else inside it

Do you have spawn ready to go?
Make sure to whiff the compost before you spawn so it doesn't stank. It kinda looks sweaty...

It should be pasteurized already so you should be ok open air. But can’t hurt to SAB it.

sandman, i don't currently have any spawn. i'll probably knock up the rye bags with some spare plates i have going & toss those into the compost bag. i'll make sure to check for any off smells before i use it
aka, thanks! i might just SAB it to be safe. one last question: do i fruit this out of the bag like some oysters or something? it seems silly to me to colonize a sub & then break it up into a mono or something.

trash it then IMO it's best used immediately and it's already been shipped to you.

Hmm ok I think I’ll do that. But I should remove the uncolonized grains right on the bottom right? Like grab the colonized chunk in one hand and then pour them all out and then put it back.
Thanks everyone for the input. I’ll make the bags smaller next time
