Did I accidentally say that? Because I didn't mean to say that. I don't think that and I'm not sure where that's coming from.
I literally didn't know if bacteria will actually eventually show up in my tubs or if all it does is sit there and silently slightly diminish my flushes. Sorry if that question felt like a challenge to mushroom cultivators everywhere.

its probably just about need. like if you dont have fruits yet, youll want to spawn anything that can give fruits. but once you got a few flushes youll be all dandy and may not want to waste time with spawn that will give smaller yields.

And to think I paid $15 for a 50 lb. bag and they are as clean as grocery store grain. $15 is the same price I would pay for those dirty oats from TSC.

Where'd you get those?

If you happen to be in the Midwest look for a chain of stores called rural king. There oats are by far the cleanest I've picked up. You can order online but shipping is killer. I had to and it makes it not worth it

Ah blasted darn. I noticed the other day the oats im using are just gross. I always have to filter out all the dust and shit and lately ive been finding (dead and sterilized) bugs in my spawn. Its like they just swept up the barn floor and threw it in the bag. Id bet 5 pounds of the 50 pound bag is dust, straw, and bugs

Bacterial spawn may or may not bring about boner inspiring canopies. There's a dude at my work that grants wishes, but i dnt knw anyone with a working crystal ball. I'd imagine one wud have to be borderline retarded not to be able to correctly weigh the likelihood of clean spawn vs bac spawn throwing a healthy canopy. But hell, it's a new day.

I just spawned to bulk for the first time. 1½ quarts on a 1:1 ratio with an addition half quart of CVG as a casing layer. Turns out, my shoeboxes have a bit more area than the normal ones, so the cake is pretty thin. About 1½".
What should I expect from this? No fruits? Small fruits?

Congrats on your first bulk attempt peppel36. I wouldn't overthink it too much. I learn the most through trial and error and observing things directly. I would expect some fruits provided your spawn was clean. Cultures even pin/fruit on agar plates so there's really no rule of thumb about how deep your sub needs to be. Best of luck.

Back to subject of bags In a SAB.....
I tried bags for a little in a SAB and had great success by stacking sab on top of another tote
So it was like an extra tall SAB with the arm holes at top. I had to stand to use it
First clean tubs, then load material, then add sab on top, let it settle and go for it
Not a long term solution but it does work for those of you who want to try

APE does not require a casing layer, so a nice flat 1/2" top layer is fine. I've had many problems in most facets of cube cultivation and i still jst dnt understand why APE is so difficult for some. Aside from an extra week to pin, it's jst like any other cube.

Ive honestly been having a hard time with it. Maybe my spawn wasnt good but in the exact same conditions, spawn time, and coir mix as this: Ive been getting this out of the APEs:
Its likely my spawn but it looked so good.

i think p9 was referencing another user & both have been pretty spicy with each other in this thread lol, i wouldn't concern yourself with it. it seems like you're just asking a legitimate question to me.
i am open to corrections here if i am wrong, but as far as i understand it, if your spawn is clean & you're not running a substrate you need to pasteurize like manure, any contamination you get is going to come from unclean spawn. ime bacteria won't outright kill or out-compete the myc, but i think once the myc gets weaker from focusing on fruiting it gives an opportunity for contamination to step in & flourish after a flush or two. basically if your spawn starts clean, you shouldn't have any contamination at any point in the grow. if you did get contams, you most likely had some sneaky bacteria.
clean spawn will always be king, & is definitely preferable every time, but if you're not growing pounds a week & are just looking for mushrooms for occasional personal stuff you'll still get mushrooms off bacterial spawn. i've spawned some gnarly shit & still gotten mushies. were they the best flushes ever? fuck no they weren't lol. but if i can pull an ounce off a shoebox before it trichs out i think that's better than no mushrooms at all. if i had waited to spawn until i had 100% clean spawn i would have gone half a year without anything. that being said, you should always be striving to clean your shit up & get the best results you can & it's important to recognize the areas you need to improve in, & we definitely don't want bad info or practices to be encouraged on this site. one minute browsing reddit will show you how bad that gets lol.
@ashtray:
i take it the pics in your sig are your tubs? you look like you've come a long way since you first started posting here!! i don't have much experience with ape so take this with a grain of salt, but if i remember correctly ape isn't a super heavy fruiter. if that's multispore you may just need to take some clones for better cultures. i'm sure there are a lot of factors contributing to your tubs that i'm totally missing as well but just something to think about.
