I've been flaming the same blade for a couple months now. At some point it just starts to bend/rust/soot too much so it may be better to change it.

Damn, I could have saved $5 buying 10 blades instead of 20. I guess I will pass these on to my grandchildren one day.

Stareatclouds sent me 3 blades once nearly 5 years ago after I made a post about how I had been using the same blade for a year. A few months ago I finally replaced the last blade he sent me so they can go a long time
I've made a post about it before in this thread with a comparison shot of a blade I used for 2 years and a new one. I should add none of this was due to anything but a penchant for procrastination and laziness

I try to use my blades for a while but they usually bend like crazy to the point they fall off the scalpel or they get super fragile and snap after a couple weeks. Might be cause I torch the shit out of them.

Just bend them back it's what I do
After a few times the blade tempers and stays in place better than a new one.
Pics of super old well used blades. I've legit used less than 10 blades my entire myco career
All 3 blades that stare sent me
Used each one for many moons

Ok I got a noob question, I’ve been trying to figure it out on my own through different teks and the couple beginners guides people have written up but I feel like I’m getting conflicting info. In regards to colonizing mycelium and air exchange. Should colonizing grain jars/bags be allowed FAE? A couple of the beginner guides say throw your BRF jars on a shelf and they’ll be fine. And i know mycelium needs some air, but say for monotubs you should tape up the holes during colonization. And an increase in oxygen from increased FAE helps trigger pinning hence the opening the top for invitro, removing the lid of shoeboxes, and removing the tape on monotubs when your ready for fruiting. But before I’m ready to fruit and don’t want early pinning, should I be trying to limit the amount of fresh air around colonizing jars and bags of spawn?
Also, is it normal to have no growth in certain areas of a jar or bag? I’m not sure if this would be considered “sectoring” because I don’t see any signs bacteria or anything else. I’ve been seeing this more and more and I’m not sure what’s going on. A couple timesI knew I bungled the moisture content. WBS came out the PC looking too wet in some of the jars a couple times. I used too much LI on some already wet looking spawn without realizing how much was too much. Whats confusing me is I’m having issues even with things seemingly look good and the problems persist over different types of spawn and different inoculation methods (agar wedge drops, LI from agar in a blender jar, LI from shaking broken glass in a jar of water with agar and once half a 1/2 pint cake, and I even did a run of honey water LC that worked well. Next time I tried it didn’t work so well so I decided LI should be the way to go). Can anyone shed some light on what’s happening? Is it common to have bacteria or other contaminants that aren’t clearly visible causing this “sectoring”? I’m sure air exchange has something to do with all this but I’m just confused because I did a few runs of BRF jars for my first attempts and didn’t have any issues. I only had a couple of those first jars contaminate and thought that was pretty good for my first few runs. I appreciate any guidance anyone can offer.

Totally unnecessary but i like how the fresh blades cut

FAE is for tubs, GE (gas exchange) is for jars/bags. as long as you have small holes covered with filters its enough. closet/shelf/open air doesnt matter, light is still good though.
your agar plates are probably not clean before you make LC or LI thats why you have spots where myc doesnt want to grow. if you want more troubleshooting you prob need your own thread with pics of agar plates, colonizing jars, etc cause no one knows any of your growing conditions.

Actually, grain jars stall without some FAE. LC doesn't have that issue. That's why people can use syringe filters (pretty restrictive) as LC filters but not for grain jars. (Also, "gas exchange" refers to a more limited air exchange such as pressure equalization.) But you're right that jars don't need a lot of FAE.

I just bought 100 x #11 blades for around $15 so I won't have to worry about buying them ever again lol. Not necessary but the small cost difference between 10 and 100 just seemed worth it.

I'm seeing most people use SFDs on their grain jars.. always used 2-3 layers of micropore - should I be making the switch and why?

Yes because micropore sucks and sfd’s are waterproof so you can ditch the foil

Sweet thanks. Gonna try these stick on ones on Amazon. Would you make the hole any bigger for these? Usually have a very small hole pierced with smallest screwdriver.

Can anyone please recommend an LME agar recipe that would be good for stubborn spores? I know you want softer agar, I'm just not sure exactly what that means. Also, is it possible that gentamicin could inhibit germination? Thanks.

I like to make my transfer plates with 10g agar powder and 8g LME. Germination plates get 8g agar powder and 8g LME.

I like the foil, it allows me to carry my jars from the pc to my work space knowing that my lids haven't been touched directly and remain sterile.

Me too, it probably doesn’t make much difference but I feel better taking the foil off in front of the hood.
With blades I use the same one up until I need to take a clone from a smaller mushroom. Gotta have the razor sharpness for that.
Although I have noticed when I use the same one for a long time it takes longer and longer to flame it red hot as the carbon or whatever builds up on it.

I hate foil because of the noise and its just another step in a process that I already dread lol. We all have different tolerances
