I don’t think temp is a problem really anymore. I for sure have more mold problems during summer but when my stuff is clean it still goes multiple flushes even when the temp never goes below 90.
Cronicr made a thread a while back about a culture he had that looked great on plates and grain, and colonized the sub fine. But then every single time it would blow up with trich instead of pinning.
Maybe you’ve got some super sneaky trich leeching off your myc.

Idk. I am a bit skeptical about this hidden contam thing that folks talk about around here. I would consider it as a possibility if it wasn't happening to 3 different cultures. I have seen trich shows its ugly green face on agar and grain plenty of times over the years. Why would it all of the sudden decide to now wait until the grain is spawned to bulk to show up? Anyway, I haven't lossed confidence yet. I am going to get this figured out.

I didn't really notice a huge uptick in contams this summer either surprisingly and it was regularly over 90 during the heat waves. I grow in a shed as well. I did have a problem with getting tons of aborts and pins dying due to the heat, though.
And BrownBear, I'm sure you've considered this already, but could it be that the container you use to cook your coir is contaminated? I'm curious to see your results with the grain experiment. Persistent contam issues can be heartbreaking but I'm sure you'll figure it out. I assume RGS is rye grass seed?

If you spill or mix some grains in there (or there were just nasties present in the coir) and don't clean it sufficiently after use. Though I doubt BrownBear is that unclean.
I also noticed from one brand of coir I've tried, it starts to smell bacterial after some time if I don't clean them out. Not sure if it's a problem but it is weird.

For some reason I was thinking it was the same culture. Yeah if it’s three there’s gotta be a hole somewhere in something.
Pretty sure this is the one I was thinking of in case anybody’s interested, haven’t had time to go through it yet.

For my gourmet/meds I do agar to master jar, master jar to 10 receiving jars, and those 10 jars to 40-50 blocks. Supped blocks means less spawn which means less jars/bags of spawn around
I use 2 prestos for spawn and the steam sterilizer for supped blocks. Just get yourself into a set routine with grain cooks. I use bags for gourmet spawn too but only for oyster straw logs.
Set up a weekly schedule like any other job. Monday is cooking masters and agar day, tuesday and wed are prepping sub/sterilizing days so on and so forth. Just gotta keep it up or you'll hit a bottleneck real quick.
You can sterilize sawdust blocks then store them til you need to use them, though. Same with grain bags really but a bit more risky and not really recommended.
Yep, ive nocced heavily supped blocks that were 6 months old with no issues. Just gotta make sure the rats dont get into them

I do use the same 24 qt stock pot to cook my grain and hydrate my coir. I wash the pot in between uses. I did consider it a possibility but I have had the same results hydrating my coir in a brand new 66 qt and a 110 qt tub. At this point I am going to have to wait and see the results of the wheat and popcorn in a couple of weeks.

I use the same bucket to soak wbs and hydrate coir. It does make me nervous sometimes especially making coir right after draining the wbs out of the bucket.
I do the same thing though, scrub it with soap and then let it dry and spray/wipe down with iso.
It doesn’t seem like a tiny bit of residual grain water would be a big deal even if some made it into the coir but who knows.

Its titally fine if u rinse the container out after making grains. Its when youve cooked 100 or so lbs of grain without rinsing and then boil some water in the pot thats caked with grain starch for your coir where ive had issues. Nowdays i just use 2 pots fir convenience tho

Brownbear have you tried going from colonized grain back to agar. I did that with a culture I swore was clean and it had a high bacterial load. Believe bacteria will damage myc and allow trich to take over. But I'm guessing here OFC
Space, I believe they come insulated or it won't be terrible to insulate. I'm worried about cooking alive in there if it's a clean space. For a grow room basic maintenance/cleanliness will go furthest I believe

How'd he end up resolving it? I skimmed but it seems like it just ended.
I did like reading this though:
Quote:
p9hu7 said: I've been losing about 30% of my jars that have the white plastic lids, and when the jars don't fail the tubs spawned with them do. Trich.
No leak ball lids haven't triched so it must be getting in under the lid.
Same thing happened to me. I even started leaving whole PC batches as blanks and about half would regularly contam. All of my issues in the last year came down to equipment failure so it's worth taking a second look at all that for sure..

I was just gonna ask about this and your agar pot I've caught myself boiling my coir water in my agar pot a few times). Though I agree with AKA and Ted that's it's probably not your issue, just worth considering so I avoid it to KISS.

do any of you guys sterilize agar 1.30 hours? i have a couple jars in the autoclave about to get sterilized but also a little room for two agar bottles (DFA and GWA) i'm pretty lazy to do two separate rows and do more time than needed

Ted & AKA, So you all boil your water and pour it into the bucket of coir? I have tried boiling the water and using hot tap water to hydrate. I have not considered the coir as a possibilty for my contams. I mean I have used it numerous times as a hydro medium to grow cannabis and I not once have seen trich growing on it.
rockyfungus, I have not but I will definitely be giving that a try if the wheat and/or the popcorn crap out on me also.
junk_f00d, I make my agar in a blender ball cup and heat the water in the microwave.

Yeah I boil a pot of water and dump it on the coir in the bucket, then put a lid on. If I want to spawn ASAP I’ll only pour like 70% and then an hour later add the last 30% as cold water so I can use it right away.
I wish I had remembered the brand, but I bought a brick once that triched out a batch of 15 shoeboxes. I started pasteurizing the coir and then it worked fine. Only that one brand/brick though everything else has been great.

after searching a while I found the answer. For anyone who wanna know, the quick answer is yes, you can sterilize agar for 1.5 hours and it'd be no problem https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26225674

I don't even know if I can legally put one on the porperty...either landlord or HOA or county may quash it. Sigh...more research. Also, gotta be able to take it with me if I get booted. I am, after living in the tropics 6 years, still a city boy. Just ddg to shed name?

I've used a VPN since I signed up. Unless you mean something different? It's kinda hard to block VPNs.
