Very disappointed in this pinset... This all I'm gonna get? 10 BRF cakes spawned to equal parts coir/Verm.

Cambodian or Ecuador strain. 27qt tub, with id say 2-2.5 inch substrate depth. Hang on got a measuring tape right here... Yeah 2" sub depth. Really nice rings around the holes... This can't be all the pins I'm gonna get... Shit. Any ideas?

You should see more second flush. MS is random. Sometimes you win.

I've heard using cakes as spawn doesn't amount to much but I've had 7qt jars also not give me much ms does suck tho my clone tub is looking way better than my ms tubs

Having fruited cakes to bulk more than a handful of times, I've never had amazing results. Certainly nothing to say bulk cakes perform better than regular cakes.

Based on what I just posted, I sure hope that second flush comes in or I'm very much going to be regretting not fruiting as cakes...

It's simply easier making a monotub vs asking my wife to most while I'm at work, etc...

I have a 51qt, longer than tall, colonizing now with my first ever grains. Used WBS. 5 jars to I believe 3 parts coir/Verm, cased, letting colOnise. Been a few days and geating some growth through the casing layer. Can't wait to see how it performs.

It might make a really good casing. That's worth a shot for sure

Spawning slurried cakes to bulk will get you a good yield. Maybe even better than fruiting as cakes, but the ease of maintenance alone makes it worthwhile.

Been here a couple months.Just recently started posting. Started first PF tek with 14 1/2 pints. They are coming along nicely. So my question is, since I inoculated with PE and then read it does not do well on cakes, can I break up cakes and spawn to bulk?

It does fine on cakes and cakes are best fruited as cakes. This is PE Uncut.

So this isn't worthy of its own thread, but I'm curious of everyone's expectations as to the translucency of their agar plates. I started working with agar about a month or more ago, am about >100 plates in and things have been going well.

I was using Outgrow's premixed MEA at the advised ratio, and the plates were coming out very transparent/see through, light in color and pretty much how I'd expect. I've had a couple of contaminated plates and was able to spot them very quickly.

I ran out of Outgrow's premixed MEA, and picked up some premixed MEA from Stamet's shop (not sure if they're a sponsor so, yeah), prepared it the same way I've been doing Outgrow's MEA, yet the agar comes out darker and fairly opaque, with visible dark specks of something that isn't fully dissolved or insoluble.

Tried simmering before PCing, not simmering, being sure to shake the shit out of it before PCing etc. Same result. Is this just the way their premixed MEA rolls?

I feel like more transparent/clear agar would be more optimal for the sake of spotting contaminates and my culture-viewing pleasures. Am I just being picky? Or am I using FG's premixed MEA incorrectly?

I've done some searches and it seems that the consensus is that MEA should typically be coming out more transparent?

How long do you PC? Sounds like the sugars are caramelizing from overcooking

I was doing 20-25 minutes on the Outgrow MEA, so despite the 45 minute recommendation on FG's stuff, I still went ahead with 20-25 minutes as 45 minutes seemed a bit long. And on another note, I figured fuck it and went ahead with a 45 minute period thinking maybe it wasn't long enough to fully dissolve everything, and still same results.

I don't believe anything is getting caramelized, as I see the same little dark specks immediately after adding water to the powder in my media bottle and shaking it up. I'll edit some pics in to this post here shortly.

When I first used the FG stuff a few times and ended up with opaque dishes, I made my last batch of Outgrow's MEA just to see if I was brainfarting something in the process, and nope, it came out perfect. Makes me think I ended up with some funky batch of MEA from FG, idk

What psi?
I dont cook agar above 15psi, one of those mushroom books mentions not to.
Says it makes mutants more likely and like what mad season mentioned.

15psi, and am careful to not let it exceed.

FG MEA - if you enlarge the pic you can see the little dark particles I'm talking about. Like I mentioned in my other post, these little particles are visible immediately after adding water to the powder and shaking it up, so I don't believe they are the result of any caramelization.

Outgrow MEA

Both batches of agar were prepared the same way, plates were poured the same thickness, splitting about 450ml between 20 plates. Viewing both from the bottom in the pics.

Thanks for the help folks.

Could also be dark malt extract, or they have very different concentrations of malt vs agar in their mixes. I prefer just doing my own malt mixes. Much cheaper too, and you can get light malt lol, and you can mix to your own desired consistency.

I guess I didn't consider that they may be using dark malt extract. Yeah I'm probably going to start going that route. I mean, am I wrong in my assumption that transparent agar is ideal for what we're doing? I guess it could boil down to personal preference, but that's what makes sense.
