That is a serious accomplishment

Mush cult...right! A good three quarters of my lc pour to grain turned out contaminated (showed metabolites at full colonization). My melmak a2g are about 3/4 colonized. Hope them make it to fruit. Never seen a melmak b4 mine eyes. Poured the last Ape lc and last two melmak LCs last night. Put my pc and sab away.
Was never able to get predominantly clean spawn no matter how much time i put into combing over my sterile procedures. There is nothing left to comb. Doesnt add up.
Oh well. I have 90% of a mycology lab to sell off.

I like to see that I'm not alone in having more actives than I will need for years after just a couple tubs, hell one of them is still fruiting. Shit just went better than I expected, I've learned a lot in the process, and I have a load more coming.
I love what I've learned about fungi in general and want to continue growing. I'm going to move on to medicinal and edible fairly soon I think, but growing actives is so damn fun and interesting I'm going to keep at it. Just don't really know what in the fuck I'm going to do with all the actual mushrooms.

I just put a couple clones to agar from a big shroom I had about to open veil. It stained so incredibly dark blue so quickly, damn near black. Hopefully at least one of the samples grow. I just grabbed it because big, but the stump in the tub is the darkest one I've seen. What luck!

Maybe I shouldn't have gotten into agar and grain if I want to actually do mycology for more than two months every couple years.
Every grow doesn't have to be huge just because you can go huge. I used to only grow in shoeboxes so I could play with multiple sets of genetics at a time. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to grow inside sterile half-pint jars so I can get clean atl 7 pin clones ( )
And like p9hu7 said. You can grow edibles and medicinals. You can get into field mycology too. Looking for species native to your area.
There's a healthy colony of Elm Mushrooms that fruits in a park near here in the fall. This year I'm going to get a sample so I can domesticate it.
So yeah. If you don't want to grow in 55qt monos, don't.

Even with shoeboxes you’ll quickly have more than you can handle. I was ok for the first 8-10 months because everybody was super excited to have shrooms, but then it got to where I couldn’t even give them away
I’ve got 12 half gallon jars crammed full as my “personal stash” and after that they go into 4oz bags and thrown in a dresser until they get too old.
For me it was getting a real pc that did it. When I could only cook one jar there literally wasn’t enough time to go deep.

My actives projects will be very small scale shoebox deals for the next little while. Now that I'm set up again it's time to dial in my gourmet and medicinals, some pans, experiments, and clone hunts.
Now that restaurants are open I'm running some new edible cultures with straight hwfp to get baseline performance and then experimenting with different ammendments. There soo much that can be done without having to stockpile huge amounts of actives, but as mentioned above, better to have too much than not enough.
I love being back at it again. My lab is way too cluttered atm It's nice having two flowhoods to choose from.

Are you doing different types of amendments or different percentages of the same stuff??
I did straight hwfp my first run and it was alright, but adding the 20% bran seemed to make a huge difference.
I did wonder how they arrived at 20% though.

Different kinds of ammendments, and then toying with the amounts. Lots of variables and tinkering.
So my first round is hwfp, then gradually increasing spawn. I'll take clones and log performances. Once I have a baseline I'll start adding different ammendments starting with a comparison between wheat bran and BRF, brf is easier to source in bulk, I don't have access to soybean hulls.
I want to determine how these all compare to each other. All of my runs will be comparisons between readily available, inexpensive ammendment options. I'm looking forward to using different pelletized meal from farm supply stores, coffee, brf, different types flours, basically anything that keeps me busy growing and trying new things.
I'm mostly curious to discover how these ammendments influence flavor, if at all.

No one murder me for bringing up academia again but...
There's been some excellent studies on how different amendments influence protein content.
This guy does an excellent job compiling different studies onto one website if you want to do some digging.
The page on recycling Spent Mushroom Substrate back into Mushroom Substrate is one that's really peaked my interest. Resupplementing, rehydrating, and re-sterilizing SMS from my edible grows and trying to fruit Tamps off it (only active I'm working with now) is an experiment I'll be working on here pretty soon.

Welp I spotted a couple fungus gnats in some lettuce I had growing. I managed to kill several of them and I pitched the tray. My latched shoeboxes are about 60 feet and 3 doors away. I guess its time to pray.

Have any of you ever tried fruiting cubensis on vegetable scraps, rope, and crap your ex ex girlfriend left in the house?
I'm thinking of doing an in-vitro grow with some proper grain and coir, but also (chopped) banana peels, jute rope, de-fatted almond powder, spent tea bags, expired tea bags, paper or cardboard, kelp, longan peels, and longan seeds. I get that it may not fruit or may have long intervals between flushes.
In short, can cubensis grow on uncomposted compost--carbon and nitrogen sources that have not been broken down? If there's a warm-weather edible species that would do better, I'd love a suggestion.

why are averies so insanely fast and prolific? spawn to harvest in like 8-12 days with these, with full canopies (albeit small) from MS being extremely common. has anyone had success breeding this characteristic into larger fruits? of course larger fruits would take longer to develop, but getting something like a melmak tub in 14 days spawn to harvest would be unbelievable.

Verum, would you do this plate:
It's a serbica t1, it's got excellent look but it has a green mold, and two grey molds, in total 4 contam colonies, all growing in neat concurrent circles.

Is it savable?

That's what got me I to edibles mush. I don't need to stuff a bean bag chair full of dried cubes and frankly don't have the room too. Me and my few mush/fest buddies can only eat so many before are brains can't deal with this shit.
Oysters, chestnuts, and lions mane all taste good. I could most likely fully sustain myself with microgreens, my little mush tent, and my tiny garden beside grain staples.
