How would you sterilize that thing?
It could be good for transferring a big agar puck to water for LI or LC. But with such a big area, the agar could end up sticking to the dish. It sticks proportional to area, but will be lifted only in proportion to circumference and thickness. So bigger chunks are less likely to be lifted.

That thing would be seriously difficult the sterilize, and even more difficult to get a transfer from.
Transfer tools need to remain as small as possible. That's a huge bitch.

Yea you have to consider the thermal mass if you wanted to flame it. You could sterilize it in PC for one use I guess...
Worlds biggest transfer coming in at 2.5" diameter .. I use a 1/4" stainless tube for when I feel punchy. One side to punch and one side to lift.

Way easier and faster to just cut a circle.
I could see using something like that if I wanted to cut a plate into a grid of tiny squares for dumping into a jar though.

I really like that! It looks like you drilled the holes to solve the problem of large thermal mass. Clever! I may make one from a steel straw so I get a bend and don't have to put my hands directly over the plate.
To psh: it probably won't pick up the puck, but it's a nice idea. That problem does need to be solved somehow. I bet a lot of contams come from being sloppy when trying to pick up a large amount of agar.

You can support your cutting hand with your thumb or finger of other hand to stabilize the scalpel better.

Have any of you guys tried growing cubes or tamps on spent mushroom substrate?
I'm wanting to grow a lot of edibles over the fall and winter and have a good place to store my spent substrates. I've read of people growing button mushrooms on them so I thought cubes or tamps could work too.
It would be rehydrated and sterilized. I'm sure I'd want to add some extra nutrients and pH balance it as well.

Iif the knife is too hot the mycelium will tear and stick, but also on the "cross grain" cut you have to add a lot of angle or do a sawing action to prevent tearing.
cool extensively in the edge of agar before cutting.
If you can cut the leading edge like this you can avoid the cross cutting.

You can grow gourmets on spent/contam cube sub but I don’t think it works the other way around. At least I’ve never heard of it.

I know there are primary and secondary decomposers in the fungi world. That might have something to do with what can grow off what.

I never cool my scalpel and really don't have problems with mycelium sticking to the blade. It just cauterizes right through the mycelium. Now, when I fail to let my steel straw cool enough it melts the agar and causes some temporary condensation to build up but no great struggle.

Never seen brown top available but I pay $22 a bag for White millet.
Looked up the brown and it looks an awful lot like red millet which I tried and it was horrible at absorbing water.

Cubes are both primary and secondary decomposers.
In nature they are secondary decomposers to fit a niche, in home cult they are primary decomposers.
You can grow edibles on cube subs but I've never heard of it going the other way around.
Besides, cubes arent a huge sawdust fan.
