D3monic - Float valve?...same as pop-up valve? You gotta 23qt presto or sometin else? Seems odd you wud do such fine work and not vent your pc. Sounds like your saying you place the weight on as soon as the valve pops up. With a 23qt presto, that wud not be venting at all.

Would it not? It’s venting for a good long time before it pops up. Usually pretty close to the 10 min window recommended. Always assumed it was sufficient, “steady stream of steam” not 10 mins after the pop up valve pops

Jst doesn't make sense. We got a buncha people here saying they wud loose they left nut if they didnt vent for at least 10min after the valve pops up. You dnt do that at all.
Does all this venting after the valve pops up mean diddly squat? Wtf is going on here?

I’m not gonna lie, I never paid much thought to it 🤷🏽♂️ I remembered reading ten minutes after steam starts venting. I timed it the first couple times, seemed like the valve popped up around the 12 min mark or so, I just started using that as a reference. I’ll time it again next time make sure my reasoning wasn’t off. Could explain the handful of bacterial jars I had in the past but I attributed that to using no mod and opening the PC as soon as it pressured down. Now that I’ve moved to mod and letting cool over night it’s been pretty rare

Whats a mod? I remember reading 10mins after the first sights of steam, and for me the lock never pops on its own maybe I'll let it run until it does next time to see if it will and I do the same thing letting jars fully cool down, had good luck recently with spawn doing so

On AA cookers you don't even have a pop up valve, you just look for the steam and then start your timer, I always use 7 minutes. Don't know why it would be any different on a presto.
Just my 2 cents. Honestly just wanted to be part of this thread, figure there's more knowledge here than in most cultivation books combined

I thought it was 10min after the valve pops up. That's what i was getting at.
I let it heat up and piss steam till the valve pops up, then wait another 5min b4 placing the weight on. I figured i might be having frequent bacterial issues due to only letting my pc vent for 5min b4 placing the weight on. Your saying you jst apply the weight when the valve pops up. Trippy.
I wonder if the way the heat is applied (constant flame/cycling induction) determines the proper venting time, and the textbook venting protocol covers the range. I must knw.

With an AA PC I wait for the valve to start steaming and let it vent for like 10 minutes. Then drop the weight on. This is what I do for my Presto as well.
I forgot exactly why we vent. I think it's something about making sure there aren't pockets of trapped air so the steam can reach everything evenly.
My AA is modified into a sterilizer. With an AA sterilizer you just start it heating with the stopcock valve turned vertical and after you vent the steam you flip it down.
I like this better, it's silent, no rocker and you can PC up to 28PSI. In case anyone wants to know how, you just buy a red high pressure plug and switch out the black one (50¢), and a stopcock valve for an AA sterilizer ($30). You just carefully unbolt the valve, and then screw the stopcock valve in it's place until it's tight. Don't over tighten because you can break it or strip the threads and need a new lid. The valve won't bolt all the way down flush with the lid, some threads will stick out above the lid.
I needed a new gauge so I replaced mine with the sterilizer gauge but as far as I can see they are identical, just the markings are a little different

I might do this soon. I think it is time to upgrade.
But to everyone else. I run both the Presto and the AA, I start my clock on the presto after the steam valve pops up, but I only run it as a back up and mostly just prep my grain in it now days. When prepping grain once the valve pops up I know my oats and BSSO are up to temperature.

I have 2 AA921s that I modded this way... best upgrade ever!

3rd gen plates look good, think I'm on track for a fun summer

What do you guys suggest I do at this point? I took wedges from the second gen plates and put it to agar so I have 8 spawn jars colonizing at like 10% each right now. I was thinking just make more jars, use these when they grow out for LI and make more?

I been doing more g2g than anything lately. Had a bad habit of just keeping something going on agar for the sake of it. Trying to break that cycle and putting proven genetics to cold storage.

That was a big one for me too. I was keeping everything on plates and just transferring them once a month or whatever but then eventually I had way too much going and only ever grew out a handful of newer stuff.
It was hard throwing out lots of cultures but now I just end them like nothing. No mercy.
