That brown stuff is proteins that precipitate out of solution. It's called hot break and typically occurs with malt extract but not other recipes.

thanks for the info nate
I never used malt extract. Always did DFA or GWA. Here in south america we don't have malt extract in powder, only syrup (which varies from brand to brand, and everyone is made with a mix of other sugars also) I was experimenting with BRF agar last week and had no success. At least my reishi, lion's mane and every oyster i had they didn't like it. I just threw the BRF to hot water in the blender and mixed it, then put it into the pyrex bottle leaving the sediments aside. Maybe because of that it turnt out very weak. Next time i'll try boiling it a couple minutes to mix everything together better. I'm sure it will improve. I see lots of people here using BRF with good results

How the hell is one supposed to pull spore laden fibers off of a swab? Everytime I try it with tweezers the cotton is too matted and clumped together so I either don't get anything or I pull the entire top of the swab that has all the spores on it off.

Lenz, cut into the cotton swab with your knife, try to slice it into 1/8ths if you can.

Someone has a tek, josex possibly, about dipping swabs in sterile water to make them easier to cut. I'll cut dry right onto the dish or jst plunge the whole swab.

Yeah I like to dunk them but I don't cut them, instead rip off little pieces with the tip of the scalpel and each piece gets buried in separate brf pucks but you can also bury them in agar.
Dunking them in sterile water does a good job of softening the fibers so you can easily do this. Dunking is also good to help re-hydrate the spores if they're old, which helps in making them germinate faster.
By doing this method you can be inoculating up to 8 plates or more with a single swab if you were so inclined and see good germination in each and every plate.
I often see people struggling to get swabs to germinate and this is because streaking on agar may not be sufficient sometimes, that's why a lot of people streak several plates in order to 'clean up' the swab a bit (and possibly get some germination too while they're at it) and then bury the whole swab in a plate. I like my way better because you can inoculate a greater number of plates with a very high success rate, which is good if you only happen to have a swab or two of variety that you want to grow badly and really need to succeed. Also, the pucks I do with PFtek substrate are pretty fucking awesome to germinate spores, they do it fast and growth is always strong and healthy. Again, you could do this method with agar too as I've done many times, but brf/verm mix is just too good for this, no stubborn or dirty spores will resist.

Try doing it with the tip of a fresh blade for your scalpel, but dunk the swab in sterile water before.
Medical grade swabs are harder to rip pieces off of than q-tips, so I like to dunk them a few seconds more than q-tips, like 15-20 seconds.

Sorry for noob question but why is it if you have 2 clean agar plates it's still only 1 plate that you would use for spawn jars? Would putting 2 agar in 1 jar speed up the process?

Nah man, I get what he's saying, tweezers are not the right tool for that and in the past I also had the same issue he's describing.
Damn I need to make a thread on how I germinate swabs because it really gets you good results everytime.
Will also make a side experiment within that thread where I actually swab a fruit, step on the swab and then spit on it and let it dry open air... then see if I can do a grow with said swab. That should be fun to pull off.

I use needle holders to pull the threads out but next time I'm going to try wetting it first because it does take some skill to nab the fibers. You just lock onto the very tip. Picking at it with the scalpel first like josex said probably would be easier too.
