I was thinking of making a thread about this but will ask here first. Can oats (or any given grain) just be TOO dirty to sterilize? I have a bag of oats that has birthed some weevils and I've been trying to use it before throwing it away.
The thing is, after going agar wedge -> oat spawn jar, about 50% of the time the myc does not jump from the agar to the grain, and after a month or so of storage, some of those jars contaminate (usually trich).
Should I sterilize for 3 hours instead of 2 and give it another shot or these grains just unusable?

i ran some weevil infested oats they performed like any other oat.
and i mean infested. the grain soak water had a layer of floating dead bugs. it was kinda gross. but i got my revenge.
how do you inoculate it sounds like you might be introducing contams at that point if you experience no leap off. or your grain prep need improving??

My god, just saw my electric bill for the month. I use led low wattage bulbs for grow lights, so that wouldn't spike my usage, the only cause of this could be the dehydrator. I use it for about 12 hours every 3 days so I knew it would cause a spike, but no idea it would be this bad.

Anyone else deal with this?

Ya that'll happen. People also just use an insane amount of electricity without knowing it. Plus it's one of the hottest summers in years and if you have an old ac it could be workin real hard right now.
When I looked at my old electric bills to calculate how much solar I'd need to live off-grid the exact same way as I did on-grid I was astonished. I live at like 1/30th my original Kwh usage now. Maybe even less
My suggestion would be to time your grows so you harvest all at once, or relatively all at once instead of spread out, and build a bigger dehydrator out of a cabinet and a space heater/propane to fit a larger harvest and decrease how often it needs to be ran.

I wish I could blame the ac but I barely run it. I'm sandwiched between floors so the apartment above me cools mine in the summer, and the one below heats me in the winter 😆

Yep, I went through this also. It's funny how much less you can get away with on solar just by paying attention.
I have plans to experiment with building a solar dehydrator... one day.

Is anyone experienced in plant tissue culture?
Been looking to give it a shot with some easy plants but I've been dillydallying cause the nutrient requirements and different procedures and mediums are a bit more complicated than fungal culturing. Since I have all this stuff for mush cult though I think I could get started if I just got some PP5 containers and some Murashige and Skoog medium.

Haven't messed with plant cultures but I did do some grafting with apple trees and other citrus trees. That was fun. Another good use for parafilm too

Quick question from first timer, if these were your tubs (first flush) would you harvest everything now then soak to prepare for second flush, or selectively harvest those which dropped veils overnight today and finalise tomorrow? Note harvested around 12g dry yesterday already as the inital pinset did not come in evenly:

I would pull them. It looks like there’s only a couple that aren’t mature, the rest are done the only difference is if you wait the caps will be open instead of a nice globe.

if that was my tub I'd harvest it all and get it ready for flush numero dos. If you already harvested 12g dry looks like a decent tub overall!

Someone was interested in my results from steaming supplemented sawdust bags for 12 hours at 212*F. Here are 2 bags that are 6 days old. I made a couple dozen of them. They are all about the same except one seems to be lagging behind the rest. It could just be poor mixing of the spawn with the sawdust but we'll see.

thx for the answer! I think both my oat prep and my inoculation inside the SAB might need some improvement. My agar plates don't usually contam. However my agar recipes have been shit as well for a while (don't know why) and now that I switched to Dog food Agar I'm seeing proper growth again. This may make it easier to spot contams and perhaps also get healthier myc as well. Got some T2 Nats on agar and can't wait to get em to grain

Anyone know if you can get away with pouring LC into a bag filter? Is syringe the only good way here? Can I make a cut, pour in agar water or traditional LC into the cut and open it up?
Working in a big SAB, no flowhood.

No don't cut the filter patch to pour LC. Why not pour directly into the top of the bag? I personally don't love pouring lc into bags, g2g is much better imo/e.
LC/LI to grain masters, masters g2g to bags.

Grand total for first flush was 578g wet. From approx 3-3.5 quarts of spawn, I think this is decent?
Was just reading that I should have been more careful not to remove pins which had not matured during harvest, oh well lesson learned.
Soaking for 3 hours then back to fruiting conditions.

I have been ripping off the post office since like 2015 cutting tyvek discs out of priority mail envelopes I ordered free off the internet. They work fine but I kind of feel like my operation has... exceeded doing this lmao. What is everyone doing now adays for GE/lids?

nickel sized pieces of sfd siliconed over lid hole. Just a couple large sized discs will go far.

I love tyvek discs. I put two circles on each lid and then write the variety in the jar on it and they last long enough that I usually change them because I ran out of room to label it.
