I've never seen pins form out of spore-blackened substrate. Have you?

Actually yes plenty of times lol, and the cap that emerges has no spores on it either. But definitely not as much pins as subs without a sporesplosion. That is for certain.

Mad Season said: Apparently it makes it have a much lower yield for 2nd flush. Idk exactly how true it is, or if subsequent flushes are actually from spores, and not an excessive loss of moisture during first flush, but it does seem to have some merit and proof to back it up that the later flushes do suffer from a massive spore drop.
the spores preach abstinence to the mycelium which prevents it from wanting to reproduce

I feel that a heavy sporeload smothers the sub destroying all the pinsites. It also can cause pins to abort when it comes down heavy.

This is why I don't really love fruiting from bottles. My straw PP5s got harvested a bit too late in a few of them and they're completely covered in spores. Sucks. With MS in a tub I can at least have the other parts of the sub keep producing.

Ok. Since I'm new, not sure where to post this. Wanna mix up bulk substrate. Have read up on recipes. I am having having hard time finding hpoo. There is a local company that sells a local zoo poo mixed with yard waste compost. Thinking about experimenting but have no idea how to mix it up. Any thoughts?

Yeah you can get coir from petco and such. If you want to try hpoo, check Craigslist. A lot of people give it away for free. That's how I get mine.

That's spent agaricus compost. Great for amending soil but too decomposed to feed mushrooms.

Just a heads up on coir: my local hardware store has these huge bricks of coir for like $10. They're about 10 pounds and called Plant! It. So much more than the EcoEarth bricks.

It'll have rocks, sticks and leaves in it, but those aren't a problem. Grains in them, which Pasty had a big post on BITD, are the issue. But overall, it's fine. I think nearly all coir is going to have some shit in it with the way it's processed.
