Have you guys noticed places pushing coir “grow mats” instead of bricks?
I don’t buy coir for six months and the whole scene changes now it’s expensive and shaped different.

This is why I'm looking into a bucket heater pasteurizer like Ted talked about. Poo is free, plentiful, grows great cubes, and isn't connected to a supply chain or shipping. Got a friend with a bunch of donkeys that are more than happy for me to visit so they can get skritches and watch me pick up poop.

Coco grow mats are not the same thing and are totally unusable. "Coco coir" is the pith material and the mats are made out of husk. It is a much coarser and different material than coir. Literally a doormat.

You aren't kidding about the instant pot aka I was using 250ml media bottles and foil wrapping pp petris and doing I pours in mine for months as it was just easy. I even had pretty good success running it for 2 hours with wbs, brown rice and brf cakes.
I saw this coir shortage coming the second I heard about peat being an issue. The soil peeps would go right for it, then India having outbreaks hurting the supply.ive gone back to mudabottles just to have sub options.

I am about to pour 10 more plates and make a bunch of transfers from 1 plate and I was thinking. What if you take a sterile swab and just swab the mycelium, that has to work too right?

I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. If nothing else, it is definitely worth a try.

This is what I am working with, all 3 are germ plates. I like the looks of the plate with the swab the most but dont think I will be able to get all that many transfers from it. I might just do maybe 3 from it and sit back and see how they go so I am not opening all 3 of these tonight.

I use a surgical steel dentistry pick to make transfers. If you can find something similar, maybe even a syringe needle tip, you can definitely get 10 transfers from a single plate with that little growth.

I just mean from like 12 to 2 o'clock on that plate, I guess 3-4 should be find right there, all the rest of the growth on the plates are just fluffy and not rhizo at all. I dont know if that even matters anymore though. At one point a few years ago I was reading how rizomorphic vs. tomentose doesnt mean as much as we thought previously but I am not sure how true any of that is.
Edit: Quote:
bodhisatta said: Cottony growth is just as good as rhizomorphic growth. You have no idea how it performs until you fruit it. Rhizomorphic mycelium doesn't magically mean it's somehow better
Noobs are the only ones worried about rhizomorphic growth. I don't know why they only find old ass threads that say that shit but not any new threads that say tomentose vs rhizomorphic growth is largely based on environment and cultures switch between growing rhizo or tomentose regularly
I'll just go for that rhizo area cause it looks cool and whatever other areas seem to be growing quickest

I prefer rhizo growth for visual confirmation purposes mostly. It also allows me to take the tiniest samples to transfer. However the relationship between rhizo growth and fruiting strains is misleading. I have seen so many tomentose plates pin invitro. IME, before these tomentose plates pin invitro, they tend to start forming thick strands of growth then form hyphal knots on or around those thick strands before pinning. The thick strands of growth that form before the hyphal knots maybe what was also referred to as rhizo growth. I'm not 100% sure of this but it could be where that misinformation came from.

All of my best fruiting strains have fairly tomentose/finely linear myc. Only exception would be my PE culture

Do these all look ok?

I am using a different agar recipe and it just looked different from the get go, I am more confident now, but during germination they certainly looked weird. I am gonna just transfer 9 pieces from the single dish with the swab in it so I dont put all my eggs in one basket and have 2 back up plates

Butchered the swab plate and got 6 plates out of the area I liked.

I really like working with poured plates, I like being able to hold 7 plates in my hand versus pasty plates lol
