Quick question, how do you all feel about going straight to grain from a clone T0 plate? I typically do at least one transfer to make sure everything is happy and clean but I've got some really nice looking Nat plates and I'm strongly considering just going for it.

I've biopsied to LC, and I know a few people have and suggested it at some point.

I've also inoculated grain with spore plates. Cant be any worse than the people who have grown out jars from spore syringes.

I've don't it before. Especially when they're pretty and clean. I'll take transfers first just in case shit goes south.

Been a minute ya'll, hope all's been well--returning to my natural state of checking Shroomery every hour lol.

Had a quick question, my FFU finally came in but the corner brackets were bent during shipping and I don't know what the best way to secure the filter to the fan housing is. Any tips? I'd prefer not to drill into the fan housing and I don't have the capability to make a wooden frame right now. There's foam all around the filter frame so I just need a way to keep it all pressed together and make sure air isn't coming out the sides or anything.

Ducting tape works fine too

Thanks Ted, I was thinking of using aluminum foil tape with the clamps or something to get all the gaps but you think tape on it's own would be enough?

Ya, thats all I have on mine holding it on.  The aluminum tape like you said works great and it makes a good seal

Having something in the jar to break up the colony is useful for sure, but even with nothing in it you won't see the colony clumping up if you swirl daily. At least that's always been my experience the times I used nothing to break up the myc.
It may sound crazy but there's also a bit of a learning curve on how to swirl efficiently.

Jars with nothing in it, just plain swirling:

Clumping is not much of an issue if you're planning on pouring the LC, though.

If you wanna be super baller (and make it super strong) you can use that fiber tape you build hexayurts with then put aluminum foil tape over the top of it. Probably overkill though.

Josex you better get on that idiot proof lcbottle Tek or I'll be writing it. I just ordered the tubing, bulkheads, plugs, and glass drill bits. I'll be assembling next week.

I used to pour in a SAB (I wouldn't say it's difficult but it feels awkward) until I had a really bad mold infestation in the place I used to grow and started to have a really high fail rate with everything I did, from culture work to pouring. Your success in a SAB not only hinges upon good technique, spore load plays a role and pouring became a big vector for me.

Since I switched to aspirating LC's into syringes I don't think I'll ever go back to pouring even if I had an FFU.
So much easier to squirt the amount you want and I only need to sterilize some empty syringes and needles, not much work, plus I sell LC's so it's a no-brainer for me.

Cool thanks again Ted.

That fiber tape looks wild, wish they sold it at the hardware store. Those yurts are cool as hell too never heard of those.

And Josex, how did you deal with that, especially with grain jars?

I'm having uninoculated grain jars with whole uncut SFD's under plastic lids contaminate consistently with green mold, and I have no idea what it could be at this point except for spore load in my kitchen area. I let them cool completely in the PC and them move them to shelves and I feel like them being out in the open on  the shelves next to a trashcan and food and whatnot is causing contamination. I recently started moving them straight from the PC to plastic totes so I'm hoping that helps but I totally thought an entire SFD pressed down pretty firmly wouldn't let anything in.

Ah,  makes sense for the SAB.  With the ffu i just fill syringes straight from the open jar.  Dont have to mess with screwing them on and off of the attachment to fill them

Even if you had a really bad mold infestation like my old place had, uninoculated stuff getting contaminated can only mean filter failure, lid failure or both. A truly hermetic lid with a proper filter won't contaminate no matter what.

If you're using mason jars, I'd try the 2 piece metal lids they come with and if you still get contamination then it's probably the filter, although SFD's are usually pretty damn reliable, especially if you use them whole in conjunction with a 2 piece lid. I know the 2 piece lid is kind of a pita, but I trust it more than a plastic lid.

There's also the option of switching to pickle style jars that come with one piece lids, but afaik you guys in the states can't find empty jars like that with ease, it has to be a pickle jar or sauce jar so you're better off just going with Mason jars I guess, unless you eat a shit ton of pickles.

Sheesh, that's good to know thank you. Plastic lids really haven't worked out for me at all, even when they've been brand new along with these legit thick ass polypropylene SFD's. Definitely should've tried out metal lids earlier but I just kept buying different plastic lids. Twopiece lids in front of the hood should be pretty chill though.

Tbh I never tried plastic lids for my mason jars but I know that good cultivators here use them regularly with no issues. Maybe it's actually the whole sfd covering the jar's entrance that allows some undesirable gaps? But you said it feels tight, beats me...

On the other hand, I've seen a variety of containers with threaded unmodified plastic lids contaminate on their own. The place was full of mold but seeing that tells me plastic isn't really reliable in all circumstances and since I like fullproof I ditched plastic altogether for cult. It's hermetic metal lids and efficient filters for me, those never fail unless they're old or defective.

That is all I use is metal two piece lids. I put 2 small round magnets under my index finger inside my glove which helps keep the lid and ring together as I lift it in front of the hood.

I like to remove my ring so I can get a good wipe on those threads. I use plastic and 2 piece. Sometimes I like one more than the other depending on which that's pissing me off at the moment.
