Not all the wheat will be super plump when first out of the water. I let it steam itself and it all balances out well enough that by the time it cools I can just load the bags. Typical soak time is likely 90min

Starting work on an actual effective fungus gnat trap. After that Penn State article I had linked and talked about on the forums awhile back where the entomologists conducted that study to gauge the response of pregnant females to scents and found that the thing they're most attracted to via antennae measurements is trichoderma I had a brain fart.

A large glass vessel coated internally with something too slick for them to land on with a cone shaped entry, the bottom filled with BTI laden soil to so act as a larvae trap, and a slick vessel suspended in the middle of the unit with multiple 0.2 micron filters on it. Inside the vessel is organic matter with trichoderma mold on it. That's the plan anyway. ACV bowls and sticky traps just catch the dumb ones/males/unfertilized females and aren't effective.

They’re attracted to trich?? That’s insane.

I had a small outbreak last week and put a half pint with regular vinegar, water and couple drops of soap and it wiped them out overnight. Prob had 15 in the jar the next day and haven’t seen anymore yet.

Flypaper roll got a decent amount too. I even found a leafhopper on the roll somehow.

This was with plants though.

Yeah, Penn state entomology department did the testing on it and discovered that pregnant females seek fungi like trichoderma as an ideal laying spot. Which makes sense.
https://news.psu.edu/story/423023/2016/08/30/research/lord-gnats

This new assay is a round glass dish with two holes in the bottom, each connected to a glass tube that leads to a container holding a different fungus. Cloonan releases a female gnat into the dish and she flies down into the container with the fungus she likes. He records the choice the female makes and how many eggs she lays, then repeats the experiment with several hundred other females.

He has found they’re strongly attracted to a few fungi, including Trichoderma aggressivum.

Which makes absolute sense. Trich is all over, especially near plant roots. The pregnant females seek it out, lay their eggs the larvae chomp the trich and emerge covered in mycelium to help spread it which allows for more laying sites.

Mushroom farmers have long believed the fungus gnats were responsible for bringing green mold into mushroom houses, but there was little experimental data to back them up. Fellow graduate student Maria Mazin has been able to show that not only are female gnats attracted to the green mold, but they probably bring it in the house and spread it around as they lay eggs.

Ergo ipso facto leviosa reducto.. fungus gnats spread contams but using contams like trich as a bait could be the best possible trap we can make. I'm even toying with the idea of simply just keeping around a shoebox full of saturated substrate with trich growing on it and having it treated with BTI so it's just a simple larvae trap. I want adults to be able to get into it but not back out and I think a lid with small holes that's greased up underneath with stick shit might be the key. They land on the top of the lid to crawl into the hole and then fly down to the substrate, lay their eggs which get nuked by the BTI, then as they try to fly out they land on the underside of the lid to crawl back to the hole and get stuck in the sticky icky.

Weird. Take makes total since. And I've wondered why I see little pockets of mold in my lionsmane, seemingly where I see those rare flies coming from.

So what's a recommended trap like he Haha?
I wonder if something could be made out of a Mason jar and a tube/straw? Tapered inside the jar? The vessel needs to be lubricated? Maybe put some trich in the jar?

Getting the pregnant ones is huge too.

You could prob put some trich soil in a cup and then put either a funnel or a layer of cling with tiny holes and maybe glue on the underside.

I prefer just keeping trich out of my grow area. I've seen them in triched out tubs but have never had a problem with the spreading elsewhere.

So, either grow trich next to my tubs to trap them...

Or let them come into my tubs, lay eggs and let BTI kill the larvae...

Or put one drop of peppermint oil in the water misting bottle I already use and never see them again.

I'll hafta think about it.

Oh another note, clean your yard too. I haven't taken care of the surrounding yard and I know I have some spent subs too close to the door.

Peppermint oil sounds cool, and minty  but how well does it manage an already existing infestation? You seem to be very... confident, about its efficacy. Share with the pleebs?

Honestly though just keep everything clean including your substrates. Growing less trich will attract less gnats right

For those who are cultivating in a home where you cannot spray the walls and shelves down with a diluted bleach solution between each run, how are you cleaning your space?

My grow room is pretty clean but I have seen 3 fungus gnats this year. I haven't been cleaning between runs besides the occasional swiffer and vacuuming as needed.

Scared me when I saw them though, I figured it would get much worse.

So here's a question, I just broke open a big bale of coir I got some years ago from a hydro shop and though it looks great so far I've heard that some coir is treated with trich spores which is not what I want.  I pasteurized the new bulk mix properly but I want to test the new stuff for trich.

Will it grow on it if I just soak some in warm water and let it sit out covered up for a while?  Which is what I'm doing now.

Or would that infection occur only after the mycelium colonizes it? :cannotunsee:
