I understand the allure of millet, but I say fuck it. My last bag was like half cracked and hydrating it sucks. If I want a grain that's tough I'll take Milo, but wheat is so simple and versatile. I just nocced 8 bags of rolled barley, should be good aside one bag cracked slightly on the side.

New Question: These jars are 2 and 3 days old. They aree my first oats. Do they look too wet? I see a fair number of burst ones, I think. Noob Eyes.
BTW some are Malabar and some are GT and I didn't write it and am too tired to go check.

Would love some experienced eyes to tell me if I'm okay so far.

Iambrownbear said: If you have a TSC near you, they sell corncob horse bedding pellets. You can get a 40lb. bag for under $10. It is mostly lignin and cellulose just like coir. My subs are 60% corncob/40% coir and have great results. If nothing else, it will help stretch your coir a little further.
Do you gotta pasteurize it? Or just field capacity?
I don't pasteurize per se. I heat up 7 quarts of water in a large stock pot until it begins to boil. I then turn off burner, add 1 small brick of coir and add 2 full quarts of corncob pellets. This recipe makes 18 quarts of hydrated substrate.

No. I am sure it would work just fine though. I just like the consistency of the coir and corncob mix.

nothing concrete but interesting nonetheless
I accidentally plugged my heater into the power strip I use for lights on a 12/12 timer and left for a couple days. Probably got down to like 50 degrees in the night. Slowed growth considerably, I expected a spore mess but caught some TOC just in time when I came back. Those mfers bruised deep deep blue immediately when I cut em and were definitely extra potent.
Edit: I just read p9hu7 sig link on poiling rather than soaking wheat. I've always soaked because I hydrate 9 gallons at a time. Any thoughts on how I would boil 9 gallons of wheat? Do you guys think poring boiling water into a 5g bucket and soaking for 2-3 hours would do the trick better than 24hr cold soak?

I just pour boiling water into a bucket that's half full of wheat, lined with a brewers bag. After 1 hr remove and fill my giant colander and allow to self steam. Works as well as I pay attention. Worst case I miss the 1hr mark and spread on my screen drying rack

What are ya'll doing for PC times on spawn bags. Buddy of mine is doing 2.5 hours for a stuffed Presto and having no troubles. I was doing 6x3qt bags at 4 hours but I've changed to 4x4qt bags and I usually run at 17psi, thinking 3 hours instead of 4 now.

sounds like pretty much the exact same theory, just different ways to get the result. if i remember right, there was some speculation in that thread that the longer colonization/fruiting times for PE & APE contribute to its potency. interesting stuff

People generally use large pots and propane burners to hydrate larger amounts of wheat. Filthy and LotKid come to mind. Check out their prep.

3.84lb wheat + 2.16lb water in a spawn bag, shake, let sit 12 hours or so and mix again, pc 3.5 hours.
My days of cauldrons and mega strainers are over.
Couple of burst grains but its no matter.

If you mean my thread https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15181139/fpart/1/vc/1 yeah it could be similar reasons.
It seems this is like a mostly unexplored area, but considering that all it takes is some spare time I'll probably get back to it eventually.

I tried this today and found that after 3 hours of soaking, the wheat was not hydrated uniformly.
Ended up hydrating it all via simmer.

Yes...yes...
Mr mushie - i always simmer all grain/seed. Letting shit slowly cool makes me thnk that ahit is growing on it making toxins.
