the .5 bags are good for substrate/ fruiting bit not so much for grain, if inuse them for grain i only do g2g so they are done quickly and they get stored in totes

I didn’t pay attention and realize how much bigger the filter is on the big bags but it’s perfect for fruiting.
I usually run the hood for a couple minutes before I start while I’m getting everything ready but I’ve also had a bunch of times where I just needed to do one transfer real quick and kicked the hood on and did the plate five seconds later with no problems.

Does the resting of your wrist in the sab really cause concern for contams? I usually put a iso sprayed paper towel down on the area I rest my wrist on to help minimize any contams... I have been spawning nothing but dud tubs recently as well... Hmmm.. I get to about 95% colonization then a few metabolite blobs appear... Sometimes an area of the jar will have uncolonized grain for a few days as well without much sign of mycelium spread over the area.

I kinda went straight into SAB mode when I got my hood but it seems like some of the scientific community does not.

Honestly I feel like it's preferance but for me I like to let it run like 5-10 minutes beforehand just to make me feel better. You could probably go to work straight away but I just imagine all the particles in the air that haven't been run through just floating around and possibly getting caught in my hair or arm and then working its way to my jar/plates/ect.
Just a peace of mind thing.

also how many people here dont flame sterilize their blades? Just use 70% iso? I am interested since I hear people do have success rates. I am new to the hobby and have agar transfer and LC success rates. But when it comes down to agar> grain jar I start seeing problems. I've been using the 70% iso to the blade instead of flame sterilizing.

Start flame sterilizing your blade and see what happens. Personally the thought of not flame sterilizing my scapel b4 a transfer makes my sphincter twitch.

Yeah not flaming is not an option. It's one of the indispensable components of sterile work. Alcohol is not a substitute in any way. I saw someone on IG doing that recently and tried to correct him, and was treated to a tirade and a recommendation to look at his grows. It was a sad sight. Bacterial jars, oopsies, and tubs with a few sad fruits.

Do you guys think working with rhizo myc for a noob is a lot easier than working with tomentose myc??? Can contams ride along with rhizo just as easily as on tomentose type myc? I am trying to figure out where the majority of my contam issues are coming from..

I only use my scalpel for wedge to jar transfers now. I use a paperclip bent and rounded with Jewelry pliers then folded in foil and PC'd in a small jar. I have 100's of them made for doing sterile work. Makes the whole process go much smoother and simpler with out all the flaming. Lot of waste but 100 paperclips is like 2 bucks so it just seems much easier if you do the prep work.
Also @CB: I tend to start my FH about 20 minuets before doing clean work. But some days I will intend to do clean work so I start it and it ends up running for an hour and I never get a chance to work then I just shut it off.

Yes resting your wrist on the hole will cause problems. Not as many as using iso instead of a torch though
SAB is like playing operation, any tiny vibration or movement will knock stuff into the air.
Type of myc doesn’t matter it’s all the same.
Pre made lc mix??
That’s one way to make a profit off lme.

I don't turn my FFU/FH off. I use propane to flame my blade. When I worked without flame I PCd like 10 scalpels with every set of agar and would use 1 scalpel per clone but across many plates.
